February 4, 200422 yr Hi Guys,I hope this isn't too far off topic, but there are a lot of gurus here that may be able to help without bending over too much backwards. I just downloaded and installed Spybot. Now, I ran the program to search for problems, and considering how long I've gone without it, the list is fairly short (about 11 items). OK, I read the help files on how to get rid of these thingies, but I also read on one good mag that Spybot can be a tad too powerful for someone who doesn't completely understand what is going on, and as such I did not hit the "Fix" button (I was afraid I might "fix" my machine into some sort of oblivion :-) ). Most of the entries refer to registry changes, most are either DSO Exploit or Windows Media Player, but one is Alexa Related and does not say anything about a registry change. That's the only one that does not list a registry change. Now, does the "registry change" mean that this program (Spybot) is GOING to change my registry with the fix, or does it mean that the spyware itself has/will change my registry? How do I know what is safe to use the Fix button on and what isn't?Thanks very much gang. I appreciate the head's up on this (and yes, I do use FS9 every day :-) ).
February 25, 200422 yr Spybot only gets rid of spyware programs that maliciously install themselves by embedding themselves in other software. Fell free to hit the "Fix All" button (after you checked them all of course). Your computer will continually start without any problems, I promise. Reg Cleaners like RegClean should only be used by someone who has an idea of what they are doing since they are powerful and one mistake can render you unbootable. A good registry cleaner for novices can be found in the program TuneUp Utlities2003, but it isn't for free. It costs about 30 bucks and is worth every penny in my opinion with it's plethora of options. You can always backup you registry anyhow before cleaning it. To do this type Regedit at the run box and then select file, export. Name the registry file whatever you like and save it in a place you'll remember. Now if something does go wrong with the registry, you can always reboot in safe mode and restore the good registry file by double clicking the backup you made before you made changes.MikeP4 2.4C @3.44 285FSBAsus P4C800 Deluxe1gb Corsair XMS PC3500 Asus V9950 FX5900 Ultra 256mb 500/950SB Audigy2 Platinum ExWatercooled baby!!!Pics: http://community.webshots.com/user/chksix2002
