I just can't seem to find the answer to this basic question about the TiVo players anywhere..Can you buy and record on them WITHOUT subscribing to the service ?I'd like to replace my video tape recorder one of these days with one so I could record and then transfer recordings to DVD etc (PC DVD recorder) but don't have use for the subscription service with all the bells and whistles. My digital cable gives me all the menu choices with times and ability to set record times etc.Can you use a TiVo like this ? or get NOwhere without monthly fees ?Thanks, couldn't find another Avsim forum that it fit better..

Tivo is not free but there are other services out there. We built a linux box at home and use Myth tv and it's free.

Sorry still need that last "bottom line" answer..A Tivo will NOT function without a subscription to a service ... correct ?
