FPS with the new AMD 64bit Processer!

Featured Replies

I have read some post on the forum saying that the new AMD 64bit processer will give a big increase in fps, so I decided to have a try, I bought a AMD 64bit 3000+ 90nm Winchester core with a abit AV8 mobo to replace the P4 2.4c system, the RAM I use are 2 256mb corsair XMS3200LL running at dual mode. After spending a few days on some hardware forum and finally I got the new system running stable at around 2200MHZ which should be equivalent to the 3500+, it can finish the 1M task in superPI for 38s, a reasonable result. But after all the effort I put on it, when it comes to FS2004, the fps doesnt seem to have an increase at all, and in fact I found it even slower than the Intel system! Having all the display setting to MAX and Ultimate traffic set to 100%, at KSEA, using the default Cessna 172, I can only get about 18fps with the default view! I didnt even turn on any FSAA and antistrope settings. The rest of the specs are:6800GT 256mb120G seagate 7200rpm SATALiteon 16X DVDThermaltake purepower 480W psuOS: WinXP ProSo can anyone tell what the problem is with the system, and possibly and solution?

Sorry to hear that your new system does not seem to have the horsepower you wanted it to have. I posted a message asking about a 64 bit chip too as I want to get rid of my P4 2.8.Looking at your specs, are you really only running 512 of ram? If so, I bet that is why your system is so slow. Windows itself uses a good portion of the 512 and the there is nothing left to give to the sim program. I would install another 512 worth of memory and see what that does for you. Also, does your memory "Match" the high performance of your AMD 64 chip? Remember, your system is only as fast as its "Slowest" component. Also, you might try turning down some of the eye candy setting in the program to see if that helps. I will not fly with the Autogen turned on as it drains too much resources and it is not very realistic.Let us know if you can get more performance out of your new system. There are a bunch of us waiting to make similar moves into new hardware.Terry

Well one thing is, only 512MB RAM is enough, but not enough for the best performance. But still, it should run well, are you sure you have the latest drivers for the MOBO and graphics card? Did you do a fresh install of XP after you put the new hardware in?

Did you do a fresh install of XP after you put the new>hardware in?Yep, I have used 1G ram on it as well, and it's the same.I also do have the latest drivers for the processer, mobo and the graphics card, as well as a fresh install of XP after I put the new hardwre in.So is there any other factor that can really affact the performence, I cant think of any at the moment. :-hmmm

I do know the autogen can kill a system very easily, which is why I run it on normal, everything else is set to MAX. That is odd, I would think with an graphics card like yours that it would do a lot better then that. I cannot offer any other ideas as to why it would run so slow.

Good luck and kind regards Jaap PS: I doubt you had all sliders maxxed with the 2.4GHz P4... Hence, not seeing an improvement is probably the greatest understatement I've seen the past 12 months...

I'm pretty sure that when running the 2.4 p4 the sliders are set to max, plus there is other ppl using a similar spec PC that can run quite smooth with all sliders maxxed. One thing I know that can affact the fps a lot is the AI planes, but as I mentioned above there are other ppl who have the AI planes set to 100% at a even busier airport have really good fps, so I guess there should be other factors that I dont know. Thanks for the help still
