I'm stuck with a PCI motherboard -- no AGP slot. Currently I have a Radeon 9100 with 128Mb RAM. Is there anything available now that can beat this? E.g., FX5700? Thanks for any advice.

Hi David, I fear there isn't anything dramatically better than the 9100 you have (as long as it isn't a SE). If you like flying 'with weather', a Geforce is probably not be the way to go either. Whilst guessing you already do so, the most effective way to increase performance is lowering the resolution and possibly AA/AF. Case you have a somewhat decent P4 CPU, the best would probably be to get a new or second-hand mainboard together with an AGP display adapter.
