Video Card recomendation Question

Featured Replies

Hi, I was wondering what was everyones opinion on new video card to buy, I was looking at:X800 Pro9800 Pro <--- Old, but many people seem to be still very very happy with itGF6800GF6600There are so many variation that I get lost, I don't want to buy a cheep "castrated" version, but at the same time don't want to spend extra for what I do not need. This card is to be used exclusively for Flight Sim, I do not care about any other games how it performs.I would like to use at least 2xAA if not 4xAA, would like to have sliders at fair levels and be able to maintain 15FPS with some other AC moving around in an airport from World Airports collection. It can only be AGP card I do not believe I can use PCIe unless I bought new MOBOMy system isn't all that new either its P4-2.8Ghz capable of 3+GHZ multi threading, my old card was GF4-Ti4200 it cooked I think cuz the fan died and my wife left it on, didn't try new fan, but I can go and buy new card "that's a good excuse, she broke it"Thank you for any suggestionsPS I know it might be kind of difficult question to answer, but just some basic info from you folks would be appreciated.Thank you

Hi Andy,It would sound like 9800 Pro is the way to go but I hesitate because you would be buying a card >2 years old. In order to help you make a more informed decision, I think it would be best if you let us know:1) What budget are you looking at? Instead of looking at the cards directly, if you gave us a budget, we may be able to tell you what cards to look out for (e.g. newer ones that will be out imminently)2) What resolution do you plan to run your FS at?Thanks,Edwin

Resolution would be 1280x1024 , as for budget UNDER $500, THE X800 I FOUND ON COMPUSA @ $350 some other type also x800 for $450 there are just too many variations and i am way confused as to X800xl ot xt or Pro... WOW besically wouldn't want something like GF400MX which would be a castrated version of GF-Ti series that's why I am confused with all the new versions of the X800 for example I do not expect a miracle after I buy a card, but since my old one is prabobally broken might as well get new one.Q, if my fan on card broke would it automatically prevent the card from turning on or does it mean the chip fried.. ? maybe i can just buy a fan for the older card, which was pretty good, but it's hard to buy a fan that will fit so I was thinking just get a new card.. card doesn't look fried or melted or anyhting so maybe card has a protection and it will not turn on when fan is broken.. though i doubt itThanks

Sorry, didn't read your original post carefully - if you have to stick to AGP, then I think 9800 Pro would be your best bet because that would likely be the cheapest. Ideally, you want to get a new machine so getting the lowest-price card may help you eventually get to a point where you can do a system overhaul.Replacing the fan is worth a try, especially since a fan and four screws can't cost that much. The fan wouldn't necessarily have to fit - you could just have the screws fit into the grooves of the heatsink on top of your card. Not the most elegant solution but it's worked for me before to extend the life of a video card for a few more months.I know I'm not giving the best advice to you but really, you get what you pay for so what you want to do all depends on how much you want to spend (obvious, I know... as I said, I'm not giving you the best advice, sorry!)Hope this helps.Edwin

Objection, Edwin. IMHO, your advise always is very helpful. :-) Kind regards Jaap
