some questions (maybe dumb ones) about BIOS and more

Featured Replies

Hello there all of you guys.I'm here in Italy strugling to get a little more from my new vcard. In details:G7VA Gigabyte mobo (agp)1.3 ghz ramexternal pro audio device (Edirol)ati 9800 pro 128 256 bitXP pro + FS9I know I don't have a high end pc but I had before a 9600 xt and thought the 9800 pro would do a sensible increase in performance. The thing is that the difference is not much noticeable and feel like I threw away some precious money.Any comment are more than welcome but here some BIOS and OS questions:Should I instal the SP2 or not?Should I instal the latest BIOS? Here I have a doubt because Gigabyte says if the system is running stable leave the actual one a forget the upgrading.Another issue. I can continue to tweak in the latest catalist (5.12) between AA and AF but there is no difference in the picture or the frame rate. Is it possible? I think I'm doing something wrong here! Thanks a lot for your help

"Should I instal the SP2 or not?"No necessary, but probably won't do harm. I run SP1 because I have no need for the security add-ons found in SP2."Should I instal the latest BIOS? Here I have a doubt because Gigabyte says if the system is running stable leave the actual one a forget the upgrading."If it ain't broke don't fix it. Doubtful that a BIOS upgrade would make a difference with your video card issue."Another issue. I can continue to tweak in the latest catalist (5.12) between AA and AF but there is no difference in the picture or the frame rate. Is it possible? I think I'm doing something wrong here!"First thing you should do is make sure your registry is clean of any previous driver installs. Use Driver Cleaner Pro to do the cleaning. Follow the instructions to the letter and it will tidy-up your registry just fine. Then reinstall the drivers for your 9800 Pro.The performance difference between your two cards isn't huge. Even so, you should still see a better IQ vs. Performance advantage with the 9800 Pro. In essence it should give you more flexibilty in how you configure the drivers for IQ in FS9.If after you've done a thorough cleaning (using Driver Cleaner Pro) and then carefully tweaked the new driver install for the 9800 Pro you're still not happy then perhaps you should return it and go back to the 9600 XT.Good luck,Greg

Greg, first of all thanks for the reply that is really useful. Second, yesterday I gave a try to Omega drivers and I could see the greatest difference.I downloaded the latest found on the site, performed a uninstallation with DCP and regcleaner, but not in Safe mode (I cannot boot in safe mode and still don't know how!), i.e. in normal mode. The thing, though, looked like it happend well because after installation of the Omegas I can get around 25-35 fps with the native resolution of 1280x1024 of my NEC digital LDC and almost all maxed on the sliders. With the catalyst I couldn't get more than 20! I couldn't beleieve I had so much difference in fps just by changing the drivers!Way to go Omega!
