March 29, 200620 yr I currently have the 9800 pro 256meg and I am looking to get more out of my rig.I am planning on a major overhall in the Fall 06 or Winter 07.I am just asking do you think spending 300 now for the 7800GS AGP is worth the $$$ compared to what I have 9800pro for FS9 ,or should I wait until my upgrade which will be based on PCIe and DDR2 from AMD.ThanksAndy
March 29, 200620 yr compared to the 9800 it will definatly make a difference. However PCIe is many times faster the the AGP bus, Depending how long long you are planning to keep your current setup, the 7800 would be nice, but if your are going to amd in the near future i would hold out and buy a PCIe videocard
March 29, 200620 yr The question is how much of a difference will the 7800 make.As I said b4 I will wait until FS10,Vista,and the new DDR2 architecture are proven vehicles b4 I upgrade.Andy
March 29, 200620 yr Differnce between the 9800, the 7800 is a few mhz slower on the GPU clock, but you'll gain about 300mhz on the memory clock. That said it also has double the ammount of pipelines and shader 3 support. Again in the time span you stated the 7800 would probally be out dated (still good card but more/other models avail.) wheter PCIe or AGP.. if at the moment your 9800 proves good enough, then just wait with the upgrade, and see what options are avail. at the time fsx gets released
March 29, 200620 yr However PCIe is many times faster the the AGP busCurrent PCIe technology is no faster than AGP 8X. PCIe has the potential to be faster, but that is as yet unrealized.I certainly would not buy any AGP card now if you're planning on a major upgrade in less than a year. Unless you're willing to dole out the cash for some extra eye candy (which is fine) until the major upgrade. Depending on the rest of your system and how you have Windows configured the 9800 Pro is a nice card with FS9.Regards,Greg
March 29, 200620 yr I appreciate your responses and I think you convinced me to wait it out.I get the itch and sometimes I need some input on telling me that there is virtue in patience.I too am using Win Xp SP1 as I installed SP2 b4 and thought that it was a detriment over improvement.Again thanks for your input.Andy
