October 26, 200619 yr Hi Matt,Well a couple of things that since the released of X have surfaced. If you want a new card, couple of things. You havent mentioned what mobo you have so unclear if u have AGP or PCIe. What also makes a big difference is what size of monitor as its an overlooked item on many peoples list when buying a GPU. (Size does matter) <-- Computerwise :-p... And as far as the rest dissapointingly MS has not optimized X to handle Dual-Core or SLI (According to Steve's blog).. so best answer the question first about your monitor and if you want a DX9 or DX10 card. Based on your answers its easier to give you a steer in the right direction.
October 26, 200619 yr Wayupthere thanks I'm looking at a flat screen Lcd 21" monitor, asus A8N32-SLI motherboard PCI e(still open to ati based motherboard)howerver if fs x is not optimized for dual-core or dual graphic cards maybe I need to rethink that??? also what is the diff. between dx9 and dx10?? based cards Thanks Matt
October 27, 200619 yr Hi Matt,As far as comparison read this link, will explain DX9 vs DX10 http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1989817,00.asp the difference is that DX10 is the new standard giving more candy and supposing to be faster cards too, current DX9 cards wont and will not natively support DX10 as its a whole new design. If sticking with XP and DX9 for a Year(s) to come you can get a nice ATI X19** or go with like an Nvid79**Those cards are capable enough to run 1280x1024 with that CPU. IF however intending to eventually upgrade to Vista and DX10, id recomend either to for now wait and ride out your current card, save money until Vista and compatible hardware has at least somewhat matured after release. If you still want to upgrade your current card, with still in mind a soon future upgrade, id suggest to look at a cheap midrange GPU that will give you a little bit of a boost on your current system, yet wont drain your wallet.NOTE: In order to use DX10 you WILL need to upgrade to Vista, MS has already made clear that XP will def. not be supporting DX10.
