Graphics help needed

Featured Replies

Purchased a new computer with following components and need some advise on graphics card.E6600 Conroe core2 duo (2.4GHz)2 gig of DDR2-800 ramAsus P5B-E motherboardAti Radeon 1600 Pro 512mb video card250 gig 7200 Western digital H.D.600 Watt Rosewill P.S.Stats: I'm getting 24 to 28 fps and the graphics are 'ziggy' with very little sharpness of detail out the front windscreen view. The side views are OK but the buildings etc. are 'wavy' at best and get a whole lot wavier or ziggy when in a turn. I'm at 1280X1024 resolution on both the computer and FS9 running WinXP. With weather and clouds set to 60% instead of 40%, my fps drop to teens.Does anybody else have this problem? Also can anyone who has this particular graphics card be kind enough to give me their settings for both the video card and the 'display' settings in MSFS.If this is an ATI issue and my card being a 1600pro, can anyone recommend a better card that would get rid of the 'ziggies' and the poor fps?Jack

Amendment:Forgot to add: Should I enable the ASUS OSD or the ASUS Splendid blocks in the display properties. I currently have the ASUS Splendid block checked and not the other one. Also, my ATI driver is Version 8.342.0.0 dated 2/2/2007 if that helps.Jack

Jack, can you put up a screenshot as to how it looks.

Don't know how to do the pic, but I did discover that I could adjust my refresh rate on my Gateway 21" widescreen from 60hz which was indicating on my ATI catalyst control center to 72hz. The ziggies and zaggies or the wavey linear images on buildings and landscape seem to be a little better with the 72hz number in the ATI control center specs. Anybody know anything more about refresh rates??When you are sitting still on the rwy, there are no wavy images to the surrounding buildings and landscape, however, when you start to roll, everything starts to zig, zag and get wavy. Very frustrating. However, I'm still playing with the refresh rates and hopefully can resolve this matter. If not, does anybody know of a better Video card that is not outrageously priced?Regards, jack

In the sim press PrintScreen and then paste into mspaint, PS or something. IMO suggest you troubleshoot first, before getting ready to fork over more cash. It might be your card, it might NOT be. Make the shot first so I/we here can actually see whats going on because your description is too vaque.>does anybody know of a better Video card that is not outrageously priced? There are plenty of GPUs way better than that, however what do you consider "outrageously priced"?

hi,ive just bought a system thats near enough identical to yours and i too am finding similar problems. i have to say that im very dissapointed with the framerates on the e6600 given that im seeing exactally the same results on my old system which was a p4 3.2HT with just a gig RAM and an ATI x600. im at this point asking myself why ive shelled out for a new system when my old one performed with the same FPS and without the dodgy graphics. going to try various new drivers ect over the next few days for the x1600 as any clouds just kill framerates. i'll report back if im successfull. otherwise im gonna fork out for an 8800gtx as i feel that the card is now dramatically letting down a processor that a lot of people are getting great results from.

I tried the PrintScreen and nothing seemed to happen. However, I think I solved the problem by matching my monitor with the proper refresh rate of 72hz on the graphics card.I'm still thinking of upgrading my card since I have a rather inexpensive card now. I was thinking about somewhere in the $ 300.00 range. Anybody know of a good card for that price//jack

Exactly. Your last sentence was spot-on. Let me know if you have any luck with the driver updates..Regards,jack

Jack,I just posted a question about the mother board you are using the Asus P5B-E. Do you use a separate sound card or does the MoBo come with enough 'grunt' to do the job?Peter

I do not have a separate sound card. I was wandering if it would make a difference if I did have one. The sound is built-in to the MB and seems to be adequate but then again, I don't know what I'd experience if I had a separate one to begin with.Regards, jack
