To Gig Or Not To Gig

Recommended Posts

Guest sunbear

I've got an 6600 core duo with an ati 1650 graphics with 512 of graphics and 2 gig of PC2-800 6400 ram. Is it worth it to upgrade to an additional 2gig of 800 ram dual channel or just buy a 8800GT graphics card at 512gig and call it a day?jack

8800GT and call it a day. DEFINITELY more perf and better pic quality. Been there, tried both. Have same specs as you (and even had ATI X1950XTX). 4GB of RAM brings nothing except trouble - especially under 32bit Windows (32bit can handle up to 2GB, with "tweaks" 3GB).

Hi guys, it's hard to answer a display adapter question without an idea about the display... A 8800GT could be overkill. Kind regards Jaap

Very true, There is no way, to give a definite answer without the knowledge of the resolution being/going to be used.Indeed, I too have seen it too many times before, people spending an x-amount of cash for a GPU that barely gets "used" with the things they do.. Don't just jump the gun, give some more info, and maybe you could save yourself some cash. Be a smart buyer, and research thoroughly. ;)BTW: going 4GB requires you to have a 64bit OS, just an xtra FYI.Regards,
