Power Supply and Video Card Amperage

Featured Replies

Is it possible to under power a video card?My computer's power supply has four 12 volt rails each producing 18 amps. Currently I have the video card powered by a PCI-E cable, one of the 18 volt rails. Some reports I read indicated the 8800GT OC card uses 142 watts at idle and 220 watts at load. Card manufacturer only references a total PS wattage requirement, not an amperage requirement for the card.12 volts times 18 amps gives 216 watts of power per 12 volt rail. At load, the video card uses 220 watts, hence the under power.I have a dual molex to 6 pin (2x3) adpater. Can I attach one molex plug to 12 volt rail #1, and the other molex to 12v rail #2 thereby giving the card 36 amps? Sort of like connecting batteries in paralell; voltage stays the same but amperage doubles. Thanks,RichardPS: Also waiting on a email response from the card manufacturer.
