Search and Rescue

Donny AKA ShalomarFly 2 ROCKS!!!Almost a year ago I decided to purchase a backup CD for FLY 2 in case mine got damaged. It came with a "fivepack" including Search and Rescue 3. A few weeks ago I saw a show about Coast Guard helicopter rescues and it whetted my appetite, so I finally installed SAR 3. First off, it is definitely more of a flying game than a sim, but I think it is highly enjoyable. I'm not an expert on the subject, but the flight dynamics seem pretty good. Attempting to creep in to land on a cutter in a 15 knot headwind, almost there then- whoah! After several attempts, I could swear this "game" was accurately modeling the effect of entering the lee of the cutter's superstructure. Meaning I was rushing toward it instead of creeping just when I thought I had the landing made.. It's also fun to deploy a swimmer then sling him back up with the victim. Alas, I did see how far we have come, aparently panning with a POV hat is not supported and the spotlight only illuminates objects when in exterior view. The cockpit view is an unclickable VC that has to be panned with the2,4,6,8 on the keypad and there is no trim, but the instuments are totally smooth, no jerking. A 2D primary instrument popup is available, but I prefer the VC panned to show the view out the windscreen and the "chin bubble" for most ops. Landing at the scene of an accident and seeing your crew get out with a stretcher is its own reward. You can enter "hover mode" with a push of a button, rudder and cyclic can still be used to fine-tune your position over the scene and you can "beep your altitude" up and down but you can safely switch to a view out the sling door which is also pannable. Like I said, more a game than a sim, but highly enjoyable. Any other fans of the series out there? Was there ever a SAR 4?Best Regards, Donny:-wave
