Precipitation Defaults Issue

Featured Replies

Howdy Guys,I'm wondering if it is possible to set up a default for precipitation according to the season, when temps aren't present in the nearest station report. I landed at Jakes Bar in Alaska today (don't ask ;-) ) and Gulkana, which was 30 miles away, was -21C. Jake's Bar is also inland so I would have expected temps fairly well below zero. What I got was rain when I landed at Jakes (and no, it's a RIVER bar, not a drinking bar, and yes, it was definitely rain, thankyou :-hah). Here is what I was showing on the AS2 screen:http://home.cogeco.ca/~gdfs01/AS2Box.jpgNote there's no temp listed in the nearest station box. Actually, this was one place where I landed with broken to scattered clouds, and it appeared to suddenly go to ovcst and started raining, HOWEVER, it may have just been that the vis reduced in the precip (very realistic) and I just couldn't see the clear breaks. Anyway, this might be somthing worth looking into. Now for your viewing pleasure, a pic of my flight up to that point. I don't know how you guys did it, but I had simply spectacular wx and wx changes (all very gradual!) on the entire route. Here's what I was contending with on my VFR flight up the valley (this one caused a bit of a sweat - I used to to this in real life, and this was almost too realistic :-) - scared hell out of me at one point :-) ).http://home.cogeco.ca/~gdfs01/GDRuss3.jpg

The METAR has data that I don't think AS knew what to do with. NSW means No Significant Weather and is usually reserved for TAFs. I couldn't find any information for the TM. Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

Yup, that would explain a couple of things then. Not sure how you would address that one. I've seen it in a couple of reports though (as well as "nosig" = no significant weather). Hhmmnn :-).

Just a thought - would it be possible (or correct) when you get an unrecognized string, or something with NSW or NoSig in it, to make that equal to a CAVOK, or similar? That might smooth things out a bit, or keep them from becoming unrealistic. Just a thought on that one, but I don't know what that would be like to program.

Okaay, now I think we have an anomaly that will have to be looked at after the holidays. This is another instance of the original post, but this time there are temps in here, yet it is pouring rain. Here's the screenshot of the AS2 screen for this instance:http://home.cogeco.ca/~gdfs01/AS2Box2.jpgWhen you get a chance, this will have to be addressed, as you don't even get freezing rain at -21C (about -5F) normally. Actually, in the TAF there is -SHSN listed, so at some point that should come into the picture, I would assume. We need something in the code to say that if it is below freezing and precip is being added, it must be snow. Thanks for your attention guys.

Glenn,Please tell the weather guy at the "Bar" to lay off the sauce for a while! AS is only as good as the data. See the VCSH entry? That means SHOWERS in the Vicinity. Tell him to change SH to SN and you would see snow. Yes, snow is in the TAF, but it would need to be the most accurate, time wise. Also remember that precip below zero is not always snow. Yes at -16 it would be!!Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support
