Wind shift observations

Featured Replies

Since the other wind shift thread is getting a little on the "full" side, I decided to open a fresh one with my observations concerning the still sometimes occurring wind shifts.1.) The wind shifts are not area related, even though South Africa, where I fly to a lot sometimes has sketchy metars (Lots of ///////), the wind shifts happend on transatlantic flights from Zurich (LSZH)into KATL, KJFK, SBGL (Rio de Janeiro), as well as flights from Zurich (LSZH) to Cape Town (FACT), Sydney (YSSY) to Hong Kong (VHHH), Hong Kong (VHHH) to San Francisco (KSFO). All flights were planned using FSBuild 2.2 and the PSS A340.2.) Contrary to my initial belief that the wind shifts happen on very long flights, they seem to be more related to the number of waypoints. On 5000+ mile flights from Cape Town (FACT) to Sydney (YSSY) or Johannesburg (FAJS) to Auckland (NZAA), there were no wind shifts whatsoever, because FSBuild plotted what was essentially a GCR (Great Circle Route) with only 22 waypoints (FACT-YSSY) and 29 waypoints (FAJS-NZAA). Also, a flight from Zurich (LSZH) to SBGL (Rio de Janeiro) where I made a planning error and got a direct route from LZR (Lanzarote, Canary Islands) to Rio (35 waypoints)gave no windshifts, but a flight on the same route using the airways (58 waypoints) did yield wind shifts starting about 1500 nm before the destination. On the return flight (SBGL-LSZH) I also had wind shifts, starting at about the same point into the flight, just a little bit before "getting my feet dry" in the south of Spain, even though station coverage in Europe is rather good. 3.) Windshifts occur regardles of the global write settings. I tried it with Global Writes ON and Auto Global Toggle ON, Global Writes ON and Auto Global Toggle OFF, Global Writes OFF and Auto Global Toggle ON, Global Writes OFF and Auto Global Toggle OFF. Turning route based wind smoothing off was predictably even worse, the old "flying into a brick wall" effect was back, I alternately had the Big Bus's overspeed warning blaring at me or it go into Alpha Floor Mode(Stall avoidance). 4.) All flights were made with online wx updates to rule out hat the wind shifts are caused by isolated incidences of bad data. AS2004 was set at "Normal defaults" except obviously the Global Write Flags and Wind Smoothing that I changed around for testing purposes. FSUIPC 3.202 registered was run with minimum weather defaults. A flight plan (generated by FSbuild 2.2) was always loaded and resaved in FS9, then processed through AS2004 prior to departure. In future tests, I'll try to find more "evidence" for my number of waypoints theory, deliberately planning shorter flight for the PMDG 737NG with many waypoints, maybe I'll get an idea how many waypoints AS2004 will process before the wind shifts happen.Note to Damian and Jim: I'm not trying to find a hair in the Active Sky Soup, just hopefully help making an already great product even better. :-) Best RegardsMax (Bern, LSZB)http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg

I've experienced these kind of wind shifts as well and I am looking forward to your results. I've uploaded a flight and weather file which has wind shifts on departure from phoenix. If someone wants to try out and see if it's my setup that's wrong. koti.mbnet.fi/churche/KPHX_FLT.zipThese wind shifts are sometimes quite aggressive and I seem to have them occur over waypoints for some reason (maybe AS2004 is updating the weather?) and they modulate 4 to 5 times and usually more than 90 degrees. I'll also try to gather information when time permits to make this wonderfull product to "divine" in my computer ;-)

Hello All,First let me say that this has been a great addon program for MSFS. I continue to use it frequenty.I too have noticed extreme wind shifts and thought I would post my settings just to add to the information available in hopes for a solution. I have installed the upgrade and it helps a "little"...but on some flights the shifts still cause spectacular crashes (Crash FX...lol).I experience some wind shifts with the MS weather engine but not as extreme as those experienced with this program. Winds shifts persists on short and long flights. I typically fly the PSS 340 but have experienced them with MS default aircraft as well. Not complaining though...just wantd to add more info in hopes that the situation can be resolved soon.Thanks...cleared for landing,[email protected] //AS2004 configuration file[General]WindowPosX = 15WindowPosY = 180DefaultWeatherFolder = C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9ModulesActiveRadarSuppressionCeiling = 25000SurfaceWindLimit = 10CloudLayerLimit = 5LocalSuppressionRange = 100MinimumVisibility = 0MaximumVisibility = 50IncreasedWake = FalseDisableWindsAloft = FalseForceDestinationWeatherZone = FalsePreventIcing = FalseOnlineUpdates = TrueExtendedDestinationWindsForce = FalseGlobalWrites = FalseVoicePlayback = TrueLocalSuppression = TrueStartupSound = TrueUseProxyServer = FalseFogLayerGeneration = TrueUpdateSuppression = TrueOvercastEnhancement = TrueRouteWindSmoothing = FalseLimitSurfaceWinds = FalseLimitCloudLayers = TrueAutoGlobalWriteToggle = TrueCCWindsFix = TrueDisableUpperLayerGeneration = FalseVisibilitySmoothing = TrueDisableMessages = FalseAutoTimeZoneDetection = TrueUpdateInterval = 60VATSIMData = FalseZuluConversion = -7TAFProcessing = FalseEnforceVisibilityLimits = TrueWakeTurb = TureStartPaused = FalseUseSystemTime = TrueDisableCAVOKClouds = FalseProxyAddress = NONE:)

I've run into this also flying out of ORD to DFW. Wind was pretty smooth throughout the flight but when I was descending onto DFW the wind cut about 70 degrees in a snap...I'm curious.. Since AS2004 is feeding this data into FSUIPC, would enabling FSUIPC's "smooth wind transition" system do any good?P.

I just had some serious shifts just happen, snapped my 172 in two... :(

With the latest version I hardly have any flights in jets without windshifts.I've tried different configurations with no joy. With & without route, route smoothing, counter clockwise wind fix.......so yesterday I decided to go back to *Alpha 2* version and the winds are working without any direction problems.Actually I haven't liked any other version as much as Alpha 2.Weather has nearly always been correctly according to metars and winds aloft. There is also only rarely any cloud shifts.I just wish there would be a version of alpha 2 with some of the fixes/features to weather radar from newer versions. Then it'd be all perfect for me, at least what comes to accuracy of weather.. at least it's been correct to my observations, more so than with the MR1.

Which one is the alpha 2 release ? I have mr1b2-84, -86, -87 and going to have to try them out.

Those sounds to be beta versions of MR1I saved the alpha 2 zip, which is named as2k4update1a2.zip and version number in the program is 1.01a2

From the take it for what it is worth catagory!! I like some others, had been having wind shifts since the update to the latest version. I was getting dramatic shifts with large yaws in the nose of the airplane back and forth sometimes serveral times a minute. Well today I tried something and I am not saying it fixes the problem only that it cut out the wind shifts. I noticed that in FSUIPC the allow gusts in upper winds was checked and if I unchecked it and saved when I went back it would be checked again. So I then looked at the options in Activesky and decided to uncheck wake turbulance simulation. Once that was unchecked I went back to FSUPIC and unchecked allow gusts in upper winds and saved. This time it did not get rechecked and I flew a flight from MMCZ to KDFW without 1 single wind shift. Up till now I had not had 1 flight without a wind shift. So I don't know that it fixed anything but perhaps others can test it and see. Or perhaps I am just crazy....Happy flyingScott

Well that did it.. just copied over the old activeradar version with MR1 version.Only issue with Alpha 2 is that I cannot use the route, since it seems to use destination weather at the departure airport. But it's all fine when doesn't use the route feature :)I wonder whats so different in Alpha 2 that the other versions doesn't...Had again couple hour flight without any problems at all.. the wind was smooth and correct all the way. With MR1 I would've most likely had some clockwise windshifts....
