The invisible "Wall"

Featured Replies

Hello Jim and Damian,I've been using ActiveSky for quite a while now, and I love it.However, there is one little thing that has been bugging me that I have not seen mentioned before. Which leads me to believe it may be something with my setup. It has to do with "visibility".I hope I can explain it sufficiently.Whenever the visibility in the metar is fairly low, the clouds seem to be drawn only out to that visibility limit. This sounds right, but what I see on the screen is a very distinct cut off of the clouds. As I fly along, I can see the clouds being drawn, in a "flickering" sort of manner, as this visibility "wall" (for lack of a better term) is moving along with me. This occurs at low altitudes, usually below 10,000 feet.Is this a limitation of FS9? Or am I missing a setting somewhere? Here are my settings:In FS9:Sight distance: 60 milesCloud draw distance: 80 miles3-D cloud percantage: 100%Detailed clouds: MaximumHere's my ASV.ini://ASV configuration file Build 367[General]WindowPosX = 19440WindowPosY = 7275DefaultWeatherFolder = E:FlightSimModulesASVWeatherSuppressionCeiling = 5000SurfaceWindLimit = 10FS9Path = E:FlightSimCloudLayerLimit = 7LocalSuppressionRange = 100MinimumVisibility = 0MaximumVisibility = 39LastPlanFolder = E:FlightSimFlightsHopping Around the WorldAutoVasFrequency = 40AutoVasStrength = AEStartupMode = 3IncreasedWake = FalseDisableWindsAloft = FalseDisableRandomLightSelect = TrueFavorCumulus = TrueForcePrimaryServer = FalseForceSecondaryServer = FalseFavorCumulus = TrueDisableRandomHaze = TrueForceLowestCeiling = FalseUnpauseOnReadyStatus = TrueForceTstormsWithCB = FalseAutoSetFSTime = FalseIgnoreFSLocationUntilReady = TrueAutoConvertPlanFiles = TrueAutoRefreshAI = TrueDisableVisGraduation = FalseForceRouteAloftTemp = FalseAutoSaveAETheme = TrueOfflinePlayback = TrueEnableVAS = TrueAutoGenVAS = FalseForceDestinationWeatherZone = TruePreventIcing = TrueOnlineUpdates = FalseExtendedDestinationWindsForce = FalseDisableAllGroundUpdates = FalseGlobalWrites = TrueDepictFS9HazeLayer = FalseExtendTstormLayers = TrueDisableDirectWindControl = FalseVoicePlayback = TrueLocalSuppression = TrueStartupSound = FalseDisableGroundUpdates = FalseUseProxyServer = FalseFogLayerGeneration = TrueUpdateSuppression = TrueOvercastEnhancement = TrueIgnoreFSReadyStatus = FalseFSUIPCWindSmoothing = TrueLimitSurfaceWinds = FalseLimitCloudLayers = TrueAutoGlobalWriteToggle = TrueRainWithTS = FalseDisableUpperLayerGeneration = FalseVisibilitySmoothing = TrueDisableMessages = TrueAutoTimeZoneDetection = TrueUpdateInterval = 10VATSIMData = FalseZuluConversion = -5AloftPredictability = 100WindDriftRate = 0MaxCloudThickness = 10000MinStratusSeparation = 7000TAFProcessing = TrueEnforceVisibilityLimits = TrueWakeTurb = FalseStartPaused = TrueUseSystemTime = FalseDisableCAVOKClouds = FalseProxyAddress = NONEAnd finally, my FSUIPC.ini (Registered version 3.51)[General]History=84EGSXEQBLZ9ZV0OF5YI0TCASid=FlightTCASrange=40TrafficScanPerFrame=10AxisCalibration=NoCentredDialogue=NoClearWeatherDynamics=YesOwnWeatherChanges=NoWeatherReadInterval=4MoveBGLvariables=YesTimeForSelect=4WeatherReadsFast=NoMainMenu=&ModulesSubMenu=&FSUIPC ...WindSmoothing=YesAutoTaxiWind=NoPropTaxiWind=NoTimeSetMode=PartialWhiteMessages=NoThrottleSyncAll=NoGraduatedVisibility=NoLowerVisAltitude=0UpperVisAltitude=25000UpperVisibility=3900GenerateCirrus=NoWindShearSharp=NoUpperWindGusts=YesExtendMetarMaxVis=NoPatchSimApAlt=YesDisconnTrimForAP=NoZeroElevForAPAlt=NoAutoClearWeather=YesExtendTopWind=YesWindSmoothness=1SmoothPressure=NoPressureSmoothness=5SmoothVisibility=YesVisibilitySmoothness=4MaxSurfaceWind=0WindLimitLevel=200WindDiscardLevel=400WindAjustAltitude=NoWindAjustAltitudeBy=2000MinimumVisibility=0MaximumVisibilityFewClouds=0MaximumVisibility=0MaximumVisibilityOvercast=0MaximumVisibilityRainy=0OneCloudLayer=NoThinClouds=NoThinThunderClouds=NoCloudThinness=1000ThunderCloudThinness=10000CloudTurbulence=NoCloudIcing=NoWindTurbulence=NoSuppressAllGusts=NoExternalOptionControl=YesAutoTuneADF=NoKeepFS98CloudCover=NoShowPMcontrols=NoMagicBattery=NoRudderSpikeRemoval=NoElevatorSpikeRemoval=NoAileronSpikeRemoval=NoReversedElevatorTrim=NoTrapUserInterrupt=YesNavFreq50KHz=NoClockSync=NoSmoothIAS=YesSetVisUpperAlt=NoVisUpperAltLimit=6000MaxIce=-4WindSmoothingDelay=0WindSmoothAirborneOnly=NoVisSmoothingDelay=0VisSmoothAirborneOnly=NoSuppressCloudTurbulence=NoSuppressWindTurbulence=NoSpoilerIncrement=512ShortAircraftNameOk=NoFixWindows=NoFixControlAccel=No[JoystickCalibration]ExclThrottleSet=NoSepRevsJetsOnly=NoFlapsSetControl=0ReverserControl=66292Reverser1Control=66422Reverser2Control=66425Reverser3Control=66428Reverser4Control=66431MaxThrottleForReverser=256AileronTrimControl=0RudderTrimControl=0CowlFlaps1Control=0CowlFlaps2Control=0CowlFlaps3Control=0CowlFlaps4Control=0Thanks!...jim

Hi Jim,What you may be seeing is a limitation of FS04. Distant clouds are not drawn in full detail, but as your distance between them decrease, detail is added. This can cause this flickering/redrawing of the clouds. Sometimes it helps to lock your framerate to an acceptable number. Also, setting the cloud draw distance to 30 or 40 may help as then the clouds are already in the "detailed zone".Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg
