FSX slowdown

Featured Replies

It's exciting to be able to use one of my all-time favorite add-ons, ActiveSky, with FSX. The only hiccup I've noticed is when AS is writing new weather to the sim; when that happens, my framerates fall from about 20 to about 9. When the writes finish, the fps goes up again. I've tried disabling throttling, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.Any suggestions? I have a Core2Duo 6600, with FSX running on one core and ASv6.5 running on the other core.

Hi Dave,Do you have both throttling options disabled? Please let us know,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

In options, I have both boxes checked:<+> Disable write throttling<+> Disable process throttling

Hi,You want throttling enabled, which means to uncheck those 2 boxes for FSX. I know, the wording and meanings are confusing. I have to think about this each time!!Again, please let us know,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Thanks, Jim, for working with me on this. I unchecked those two boxes, so that throttling was enabled.Same thing: while AV is updating the various weather stations, FPS goes down to about 8-9.Is there some way to slow down the writes? I noticed that the update was going through stations pretty fast.

Hi,Did you save those settings? The station writes should be noticeably slower.Let's post you ASv6.ini file for settings.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Hi Dave,Your settings look fine.Try with AS set to the same core as FSX.Please let us know,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

"Try with AS set to the same core as FSX"Does that mean change this line to read:FS9Path = C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XMy winds in FSX have not reflected what AS6.5 would suggest they should be. Is that the problem, the above having pointed to FS9? I am also having a time with winds abruptly changing direction and speed. I have the paid version of FSUIPC 4.07 with mostly default settings. Any advice related to these wind shifts?Here is my current ini settings (after the FSX change above)://ASv6.5 configuration file Build 533[General]WindowPosX = 28305WindowPosY = -45DefaultWeatherFolder = C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9ModulesASv6SuppressionCeiling = 10000SurfaceWindLimit = 10FS9Path = C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XPersonalAppDataFolder = C:Documents and SettingsMichaelApplication DataCloudLayerLimit = 5LocalSuppressionRange = 100MinimumVisibility = 0MaximumVisibility = 59LastPlanFolder = NONEAutoVasFrequency = 30AutoVasStrength = 30TurbulenceFrequency = DefaultStartupLocation = KSEADefaultGraphicsFullTheme = DefaultGraphicsCirrusTheme = AutoSubmitGraphicsTheme = FalseIncreasedWake = FalseDisableWindsAloft = FalseForcePrimaryServer = FalseForceSecondaryServer = FalseGEProAutoSubmit = FalseUseFetchedStationforGEPro = TrueShowDecodedMBasDecimal = FalseSkyOverride = GEPROFavorCumulus = FalseForceRoutePressure = FalseForceLowestCeiling = FalseUnpauseOnReadyStatus = FalseDisableWriteThrottle = FalseDisableProcessThrottle = FalseForceTstormsWithCB = FalseAutoSetFSTime = TrueIgnoreFSLocationUntilReady = TrueAutoConvertPlanFiles = TrueAutoRefreshAI = TrueDisableVisGraduation = FalseEnableGEProWideFSMode = TrueExtendedThrottling = FalseForceRouteAloftTemp = FalseOfflinePlayback = FalseEnableVAS = TrueAutoGenVAS = TrueForceDestinationWeatherZone = FalsePreventIcing = TrueOnlineUpdates = TrueExtendedDestinationWindsForce = FalseDisableAllGroundUpdates = FalseGlobalWrites = FalseDepictFS9HazeLayer = TrueExtendTstormLayers = FalseDisableDirectWindControl = FalseVoicePlayback = TrueLocalSuppression = TrueStartupSound = TrueDisableGroundUpdates = FalseUseProxyServer = FalseFogLayerGeneration = TrueUpdateSuppression = TrueOvercastEnhancement = TrueIgnoreFSReadyStatus = TrueFSUIPCWindSmoothing = TrueLimitSurfaceWinds = FalseLimitCloudLayers = TrueAutoGlobalWriteToggle = TrueRainWithTS = TrueDisableUpperLayerGeneration = FalseVisibilitySmoothing = TrueDisableMessages = FalseAutoTimeZoneDetection = TrueUpdateInterval = 10VATSIMData = FalseZuluConversion = -6AloftPredictability = 100WindDriftRate = 0MaxCloudThickness = 10000MinStratusSeparation = 7000TAFProcessing = FalseEnforceVisibilityLimits = TrueWakeTurb = FalseStartPaused = FalseUseSystemTime = TrueDisableCAVOKClouds = FalseProxyAddress = NONE

Hi Mike,"Try with AS set to the same core as FSX"No, that means that however you dual core users set things to run on core 1 or core 2, set AS to run on the same core as FSX.Wind direction will be off due to a problem in FSX.There is no suppression at all right now so wind shifts may occur. I am not sure what settings may help in FSUIPC4.Hope this helps!Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Thanks for the answers Jim. It reminds me of the early days of FS9. Inconsistent weather, wind shifts, and abrupt changes in wind speed make online flying with FSX difficult at best. Do I understand correctly that we are handcuffed until MS corrects the internal problem?Which part of the process does the same core requirement address? I see my performance decline when totally shutting off either core for FSX function, which is necessary to assure FSX and AS are running on the same core. The support is much appreciated!!!

Hi Mike,1. Yes, you are correct. We are awaiting SP1 as there have been some weather fixes mentioned.2. The slowdown in FSX while AS is writing station data. Normally the throttling options worked, but here it is a core issue. You may want to write directly to Dave for his ideas.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

I'm running FSX on a single core per recommendations on the FSinsider.com website. Most programs that run concurrently (such as IE, TrackIr) I have set to run on the other core. While it would make sense to run ActiveSky on that second core, I found that it did create a very noticeable slowdown during station writes. Running it on the same core with FSX seems to have solved that. On the other hand, I have never tested the system with FSX running on both cores (i.e., not setting core affinity at all).
