That is simulated in default FSX as thermals. The up- and downdrafts are determined by the landclass type on the ground (see ThermalDescriptions.xml in your FSX folder). I'm not sure if the heating of the ground is in the calculation, that is if thermals increase during hot sunny days for instance./Mats
