October 21, 200817 yr Hi all,I've just completed a reformat and rebuild of my FSX PC. Right now the machine is configured like this (there are no other major software bundles or components - this is pretty much all that's on there). For the record, I took great pains throughout the rebuild to thoroughly test each stage by running FSX and flying a route. It took over a week but gave me the confidence that each bit of software was running solidly before I moved on to the next.Anyway, the spec....Hardware========AMD AM2 dual core 4200+ CPUAsrock SATA2 GLAN motherboardATI HD4850 graphics cardCreative Labs Audigy sound cardRealtek on-board sound cardSoftware========Windows XP Home SP3FSX SP2 AccelerationActiveSkyX SP3XGraphicsFSUIPCP 4.3FSInn 1.3/FSCopilot 1.7OK, so when I run FSX with ActiveSkyX I'm finding FSX hangs - a log of one of my sessions follows at the end of this post.I also tried setting the CPU affinity to a single processor but all that happened was that FSX continued to fly normally but the screen locked (judging from the ND gauge on my instrument panel). It looks for all the world as if FSX has hung but it's actually only the display that's frozen and I can't click anywhere in the FSX window to bring up menus, resize the screen etc - even the mouse pointer vanishes. There's on more thing, I found last night during a VASTIM flight that FSX was hanging completely on me even though I wasn't running Active Sky. I uninstalled ASX and rebooted and had no subsequent problems.Let me know if there's any other tests I can perform, or logs I can generate for you! Many thanks for any help you can offer!!All the bestIanLog===15:28:34: Logging Initialized15:28:34: XEngine v1.0.0.332 Copyright

October 21, 200817 yr Hi Ian,Don't run FSInn and see what happens.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/
October 22, 200817 yr Hi Jim, Still hangs without running FSInn. In fact that was my first suspcion so I uninstalled it and still get the ASX/FSX hang. Ian
October 22, 200817 yr Hi,Windowed or Full screen mode?Does ASX seem to hang at the same place each time?Is your computer room real hot? Try running with the cover off.Can you get FSX to hang without running ASX?Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/
October 26, 200817 yr Hi JimIt's not hardware - the whole lot hangs together fine without ActiveSkyX and I often fly with a friend for hours online without any problems. As soone as ActiveSkyX gets switched on it all goes a bit wrong, lol. Always has! My suspicion is that it shares some Windows components with FSInn - the FSCopilot module of FSInn is always running, it starts with FSX. It could be that you're both shipping different versions of something that's upsetting Windows but while I can live without ActiveSky I can't live without FSInn!Cheers for the help anyway, it's appreciated :()Ian
November 3, 200817 yr Any news on this problem?I reinstalled from scratch yesterday and ran ASX. It starts fine and although clicking 'Start FSX' causes flight sim to start it comes up with a black screen (window mode). If I close ASX there's the usual pause while it cleans up then, the second it shuts down, the FSX window springs into life.I've tried this numerous time but starting FSX first. Either way the FSX window hangs until ASX goes away.I hate to point fingers but all my XP service packs are up to date, Active Sky has the latest builds and FSX is on SP2/Acceleration. It all works fine until ASX starts up so I have to say that there's a problem with the product. Can you tell me what I can do to provide you with enough info to debug it. I know this can be horrendously difficult with off the shelf products but I can send logs, make videos, heck I can broadcast a webcam if it'll help but I bought the product and it doesn't work so I'd appreciate a little help. Many thanks - hope to hear from you!Ian
November 4, 200817 yr Hi,Are your video drivers up to date? What else is running, FS-wise, besides FS and AS?Edit: Have you tried running AS on your second core?Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/
November 4, 200817 yr Hi Jim,Yes the whole PC is a fresh rebuild using the latest drivers for everything. The machine is dedicated to FSX only so there's no MS Office, no other games or third party software - it's purely FSX (all the other stuff is run on a second PC through a home network using FSUIPC and WideFS).The 'Core 2' idea is a good one - I've seen mention in other forums of ASX hogging CPUs - I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes. Many thanks!Ian
November 12, 200817 yr Hi JimI tried various combinations of core affinity last night (rememeber, all I have running is FSX and ASX). I tried to cover all combinations so I tried both programs over both cores, both progs sharing the one core, FSX or core 0 with ASX on core 1 and vice versa but I still get the problem. The sim itself is running fine, it's just the display that either remains black (if ASX launches FSX) or freezes(if I start ASX with FSX already running). In both cases the display returns to normal when ASX stops running.I can upload a short video to my web page if you think it'd help you visualise what I'm seeing?Ian
November 12, 200817 yr Hi Ian,Start ASX, let it load and process the weather. Then try and launch FSX with it's shortcut and not from within ASX. Does that make a difference?Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/
November 13, 200817 yr Afraid not Jim. Just tried that but I get the same results - a black FSX screen until ASX is termrinated, then the FSX windows springs to life.Ian
November 14, 200817 yr Hi,Was this happening before the rebuild of your system?Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/
November 14, 200817 yr Unfortunately I can't be sure! I'd stopped using ASX a long time ago because FSX was hanging but I never found out why (hence the rebuild). There are only two things of note really1. Before the rebuild my machine was a real mess and FSX was hanging regularly (truly hanging the machine - no mouse response etc). After the rebuild I only see graphics freezes in the FSX window, and even then only when ASX is running2. Before the rebuild I was using an nVidia graphics card, now I'm using an ATI. But before you scratch your chin and say "Ah! (lol) I need to stress, without ASX I experience no problems at all.CheersIan(by the way, I don't know what ASX does but I'd've thought it went nowhere near any graphics engine! Doesn't it just collate weather data and pipe it into the sim, leaving FSX to worry about rendering it?? Just a mystified as to why the sim continues to run but the window freezes?)
November 14, 200817 yr Hi,The more complex weather can stress the graphics system a bit more. Try this: start ASX, minimize it and then run FSX.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/
