FS 2004 - Poor Label Definition

Featured Replies

When I recently ran FS2002 for a short while, I realised how poor was the FS2004 AI aircraft , ATC and other on screen labels definition compared with the earlier FS.The fonts and colours lack definition and clarity and are far harder to see quickly than those in FS 2002.I wonder if anyone has any tweaks for Win XP if FS 2004 which could help?

Perhaps you're using an ATI card? There are answers, but you'll need to research them, as I've never had the problem. My labels, ATC, etc, have always been sharp in FS004. But both cards are NVidia.

Same here -no problems with NVidia card.Dave

Same problem here with ATI card. Did a search but found nothing about this problem.Jozef http://pluizig.ath.cx/signature.jpg

Usual problem with fonts is that the screen is in one resolution ratio, but the monitor setup favours another ratio - e.g. 1280x960 (1.33:1 ratio), 1280x1024 (1.25:1).In order I would1: Check you have the latest graphic cards drivers2: Check that you have the screen `shape` in keeping with the resolution ratio3: Check that you actually have the required fonts installed - check that your WinXP is correctly setup (look at the `fonts` subfolder in FS2004 and check that they are actually installed in XP)Finally, Display Properties - Appearance- Effects, there is an option to check ClearType font smoothing. Some systems like it, some don't. Try swapping yours and see if that improves things. Allcott

Allcot - many thanks, I will try all your suggestions.I have two systems both with Nvidia cards and both show the same poor labels. As others are using Nvidia cards without this problem there is obviously a solution and I will keep trying.

If it's an NVidia card, then also try setting a notch or two of `image sharpening` from the colour options.Allcott

AllcotThank you againYes, on both systems I am using Nvidia cards. I have 53.16 drivers but I cannot find any "image sharpening" control anywhere under display properties. Can you let me know where to look?I have a dual boot system and, interestingly, when I load FS 2004 from Win 98SE, the labels are fine - exactly as in FS2002 and with better clarity, intensity and definition than in XP / FS2004. There is obviously an XP graphics setting somewhere that I am missing out on?

From the Properties - Settings - Advanced - choose your card - Colour Correction. If it only affects XP then it sounds more like the clear type font issue.Allcott

Funny how folks jump to conclusions. I run an ATI card and have never had any problem with fonts or text. Text, panels, etc., nice and sharp and clear all the time.

AllcotThanks again; however, I have tried the "colour correction" dialogue on two computers and neither show any image sharpening control. I guess my software is perhaps out of date so I will try the Nvidia site again.I am still pretty convinced that there is some XP/Graphics Card/FS9 interaction that I have not yet found?

Allcot[and all who helped]Just picked up the Nvidia 56.xx drivers and they gave me a noticeable improvement; the labels are not as intense as with Win 98 or ME running FS2004 but they are good enough for me.By the way, even with the latest drivers, I have still no "image sharpening" control? Many thanks
