Featured Replies

Hey all! I will be purchasing a ATI Raedon 9600SE or XT 128MB Card, to replace my Old Crappy Ge Force2 MX400 32MB card! Finally! LOL. I need some Help On Installing the ATI Card? I Know I half to remove the Old Nvdia Driver's Via the Windows Control panel, Now I need to know does the ATI Card come with it's own drivers already? When I install it? Or Do I need to download Drivers from somewhere?? I want to install this Card tonight! So Please if anyone has Good Info to Help me through this Process. I would really Apprecite the Help form all you Friendly FS Guy's in here! MIKE

I'm sure there'll be good install instructions in the box, but generally speaking, go to the video settings and select plain vanilla VGA - 640x480, 16 colors, then close down. Remove the old card, install the new one, and turn it on. The Hardware Wizard will talk you through it from there. Afterwards, you can restart in Safe mode and then use the device manager to remove the drivers for the old card.Richard

Hello Mike,Here's what I'd do. First I would not purchase an ATI card with the 'SE' moniker. Definitely get the 'XT'. ;) Then I'd download 'Driver Cleaner'. I'm not sure where to get it because I've never had to use it. It would probably turn up in a search on Google though. I hear it removes all traces of video card Drivers and Windows Registry entries. This is important. Then I'd download the latest drivers available from www.ati.com (Catalyst 4.3's at this time). Then I would disable my internet connection. Control Panel --> Network Connections --> Right Click 'Local Area Connection' and click 'Disable'. This is so Windows doesn't try to install drivers 'automagically' from the Windows Update site. Then I would uninstall the Nvidia Drivers from 'Add/Remove Programs' in the Control Panel and answer 'No' when prompted to reboot(this step may not be necessary since you are going to be running Driver Cleaner, I am not sure). Next I would go into the Device Manager and remove the GeForce2 video card from the Device Manager. Then I would run Driver Cleaner. Then shut down and physically remove the GeForce2 card and put in the new card. Then I would boot up and when prompted about installing software for new hardware that was found I would just click 'Cancel'.. twice if neccessary. Then I would install the latest ATI Drivers that I had already downloaded. Then I would reboot of course. And finally, I would re-enable my network connection.Hope that helps,Jim

MikeWith 9800 PRO cards going for $200 that's what you should get if you can possibly afford it. I just upgraded from a 9600 PRO and it was a huge improvement. It made me wish I'd bought the 9800 when it was $400 and skipped the 9600 altogether.Davidedit: After you uninstall your old drivers it's a good idea to look in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE and delete any references to your old card.
