March 31, 200422 yr HiI just thought I would post about a problem I've had recently that I've just managed to fix.Since upgrading to a XFX Nvidia FX5950 Ultra I've been having problems, with FS seemingly randomly freezing. The mouse would seem to stop responding, and so would any programs running. However if the mouse was moved and then you wait for 30 seconds, the pointer would then jump to the new position, so it was not a true crash, just very very slow! This problem only seemed to occur in FS2004, FS2002 was fine and so were a number of other games, as well as the 3Dmark2003 benchmark program. It did not seem to be heat related, and reinstalled my vga, sound and mainboard drivers to no effect. Reinstalling FS2004 did not help nor did a fresh reinstall of Windows XP, I caught a break when I purchased the Eaglesoft Citation X, every time I tried to use the deluxe model I would get a crash, either straight away or within a minute or two. This allowed me to try many different solutions, which all failed. Then it occurred to me that I had virtually forgotten about my mainboard which I had purchased before the FX5950, It had worked perfectly with my old GF3 so I assumed that it was fine.Doh!It turns out that my particular Mainboard had (lesser) known incompatibility with GF5900's, for which a BIOS upgrade was released. One quick flash later and my problem is fixed!Yay!The moral of this story is twofold:Don't assume!Just because the problem only occurs in one piece of software (one add-on even) doesn't mean the problem isn't hardware! The Technical details:This problem is specific to my configuration but maybe applicable to other similar configurationsMSI K7 N2-L Nforce 2 mainboard, probably other K7 N2 types as well.XFX Nvidia FX5950 Ultra, most likely most FX5950's and FX5900's plus possibly other FX types.Upgrading the bios either manually or using MSI's Live Update program will solve this problem.I hope this helps anyone with a similar problem.Simon.Ps, wow that was long!
