Replacing fan

Featured Replies

The fan went out on my video card. I picked up another fan at Fry's but need some help on how to remove the old fan. It seems to be attached by a dielectric glue. Like artic silver glue. How do I go about removing this fan? Thanks Chuck

I'm assuming you've already removed the plastic plugs that hold the heatsink onto the PCB? Then try twisting it from side to side to break the seal between the old heatsink and the GPU. If it still won't budge, heat it gently with hot air (from a hairdryer for example ) till the thermal compound is softer. Then you should be able to remove it with the twist method. Remove ALL traces of the old thermal compound before fitting the new heatsink (best with medical alcohol or cleaning petrol, like the stuff you can buy for petrol lighters) DON'T try to pry it off the GPU using a screwdriver or similar, and DON'T use things like thinners or aceton to clean the GPU! Use a good thermal compound like Arctic silver before assembly, not too much, just enough to cover the GPU with a THIN film. And DON'T be tempted to use a heatpad if one is supplied with the new heatsink, thermal compound is MUCH better! Hope this helps!BestGrahame (EDHL)
