PC Rebooting and CTD flying at night!

Featured Replies

HiI have a problem. I use a Ferarri Notebook AMD64-3000 with a Radeon 9700 video card supporting 8xAGP. The vid card has 128mb aboard and I use FS9.1 on Windows XP SP2. I am using the latest Omega drivers and Radlinker reports the core clock rate is 452.25 and the Memory rate is 209.25. I have 2 x 512mb SODIMM PC3200 memory cards.Flying during the day is just great. Good frame rates and smooth even in heavy clouds. However flying at night causes CTD's and System Restarts before I even get into the air.I have tried selecting the Quality vid card settings rather than Performence options and reducing the number of lights (in FS) from 8 to 6 but with no luck. I have removed any add-on scenery and associated AFCAD files but the problem persists even with default scenery. It does not matter whether using the VC or the 2D view.Has anyone experienced CTD etc only when night flying and can offer any suggestions?

OK, got to the bottom of the problem. The video card was simply overheating - although it took darn near a week to figure that out.The notebook was resting on my desk using its own support pads but that only keep it about 5mm above the desk - just not enough. Must be a design flaw. After raising the back of the notebook to about 20mm using a small book, the video card is now getting sufficient air across it and the CTD's and system restarts have ended.I'm as happy as a pig in muck!
