RAM advices?!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I would need some advices..My pc conf:Asus A7N8X Deluxe/GD 2.00 x TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 256MB CL2.5) AMD Athlon XP2500+ 1.833 GHz 333 MHz busSapphire Radeon 9800 Atlantis 128MB DDRAs you can see, i have 512 MB RAM installed in my pc.Im thinking of upgrading to eiter 1024 or 2056 mb RAM.So my question is the following:Will i see any difference in FS2004? FPS improvments? Thanks

Hi ZC, a nForce2 mainboard is a great board to use 3 RAM sticks. Right now and provided you're running in dual channel mode, you're RAM will -normally- be operating at 50% of the possible FSB speed*. This is because 256MB PC3200 modules usually are so called 'single-sided' modules. If you get yourself a -preferably identical- PC3200 stick with 512MB and plug it into the single slot you should see 2 benefits: 1st, more smoothness due to increased amount of RAM and 2nd, a slightly better performance because your mainboard can take max advantage of the mainboard's chipset potential (or FSB) due to proper RAM banking. Fyi, most modern mainboards like to address at least 2 banks (aka sides) per channel and as far as I can judge, the easiest manner to do nothing wrong is to always plug at least AND no more than 2 double-sided modules. Fyi-2, double-sided usually is PC2700 (333MHz) as of 256MB and PC3200 (400MHz) as of 512MB. The words 'normally' and 'usually' are used because there are exceptions and sowith i.e. 256MB PC3200 double-sided modules out there (Dell will have put such sticks into Flytendos which came with 512MB of RAM). Btw, after the RAM upgrade your biggest bottleneck will probably be the CPU. And btw-2, case you have one of the early Bartons, you could easily overclock the CPU by simply switching the FSB to 400MHz (turning it into a 3200 and assured your CPU-cooler is rated for 3200s). Hope this answers your question. Good luck and kind regards Jaap * If you plug the 2 sticks you have into the 'slot twins', the 512MB you have will operate with proper banking (but in single channel mode)
