October 28, 200520 yr I realize this may be a silly question, but I would love to have it definitively answered.I have an NVidia 6800GT and -- as most NVidia owners know -- there's a display applet you can use with it that lets you set Anti-aliasing, Anisotropic filtering, et. al.In that applet, you can also use something called "Application Profiles", which ostensibly let you create specific settings for each particular application/game you use. For instance, I have a "Flight Simulator 9" profile which is linked to the executable "FS9.EXE". I'm certain most Nvidia users in these forums have something very similar. However, here's my question. I have been running FS9 in Windowed mode for some time. Now.. I'm wondering whether or not the profile I've created for "FS9.EXE" actually kicks in in Windowed mode. Does anyone know for sure? I mean.. I run FlightSim 2004 in a window specifically because I am able to easily swap between applications easily. By having an NVidia profile for that specific executable, does that mean that -- whenever I switch from FS9 -- the Global Settings (also set in the applet) apply? Or does it mean that, in reality, the Global Settings set in the applet are ALWAYS the active profile simply because the profile I've connected with "FS9.EXE" never actually kicks in because I'm running FS9 in Windowed Mode.If anyone could enlighten me one way or another, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks for any help.
October 28, 200520 yr From what I remember it was always the case that Nvidia cards used the Global setting in anything other than full-screen mode. But I don't know whether that still applies with the latest driver versions, as much has changed since the 6x.xxx gave way to the 7x.xx and now the 8x.xx series and I only run in full screen. But if you made a sweeping difference between Gobal and FS9 settings, even temporarily, you should be able to see immediately - try switching anisotropic filtering OFF in global settings and to 8x or 16x in FS9 - terrain textures in the middle and far distance should tell you instantly, if they're clear they're using FS9 if they blur they're not!Allcott
October 28, 200520 yr Alcott:Okay. I gave it a shot, seriously changing my FS9.EXE profile and, lo! It works. I really lowered the quality in that profile and the effect on FS9 in windowed mode was, indeed, dramatic. So, to state the matter again, the profiling applet DOES work in windowed mode for the associated executable. That being said, I'm curious as to what settings you use in your own Nvidia display settings. Here are my current ones (I have put whether the item is checked/unchecked as well, even though I do know that an unchecked item is NOT being applied to FS9):Anti-Aliasing: checked, "4x" (off in sim, of course)Anisotropic Filtering: CHECKED, "16x"Image Settings: CHECKED, "Quality"Color Profile: unchecked, "Not available"Vertical Sync: unchecked, "Application-controlled"Force Mipmaps: unchecked, "None"Conformant Texture Clamp: unchecked, "On"Extension Limit: unchecked, "Off"Hardware Acceleration: unchecked, "Single-display mode"Trilinear Optimization: CHECKED, "Off"Anisotropic Mip Filter Optimization: CHECKED, "Off"Anisotropic Sample Optimization: CHECKED, "Off"Triple Buffering: unchecked, "Off"Negative LOD Bias: unchecked, "Allow"I'd be interested in what your own settings are (or if anyone else wants to chime in here and make a comparison) or if you see something glaringly stupid in my setup. Thanks again for reading.
October 31, 200520 yr Pretty much the same as you, except I have a colour profile specifically for FS that's much brighter than my normal desktop scheme, as I find an acceptable level for FS is way too bright for web work or word processing. Allcott
