PC Reboots When Changing Views

Featured Replies

This is interesting.I hooked up the wonderful Dell 2405 monitor on Saturday morning. Did a wonderful flight from the FS-Freeflow Bermuda to Boston Saturday evening in the Level D 767.Sunday, I did Boston to the Flightscenery Providence in the Dreamfleet Cardinal. What I'm finding now is whenever I change views, i.e., go from 2d to VC view OR to spot view, my pc reboots itself.I'm using the latest ATI Catalyst drivers, 5.10.I also have the same issue at a default airport with no addon scenery, i.e., KCVG. The problem only seems to manifest itself with addon aircraft and no specific aircraft. I've experienced the problem with the Beechcraft 1900D and the Aeroworx Beechcraft King Air 200.Any thoughts or help appreciated. Hi Ed,Sounds like a very strange issue indeed. I take it from what you say above that you have not made any further changes other then installing the screen. No new video card or other hardware? No software (driver) updates at the same time?I guess (if you indeed have made no changes) the only thing that has changed from your PC's point of view is the display resolution. I myself am using a XpertVision Geforce 7800GT with 256MB DDR3 memory, but have used an Ati 9800Pro with 128 MB DDR ram previously with this screen. No issues whatsoever (other then that the 9800 had to work pretty hard to drive that resolution, e.g. lower frame rates than before at my old CRT and a lower resolution).Your video card and that power supply should be strong enough for sure. Like I said I have used a 9800 Pro (on a 380Watts PS by the way) and had no crashes whatsoever (Now I use a 550Watts PS with my 7800GT).You might want to lower the resolution for testing proposes and try your scenery again.Report back with your findings and we take it from there!Cheers,Alex YSSY

Hey Alex...I have to confess to trying a different set of video drivers but I've also done a thorough cleansing between sets of drivers. I've also done the "rebuild the FS9.cfg" file thing which didn't help.I have tried the lower resolution (1650 x 1050) to no avail. Oddly, my initial long flight from Bermuda to Boston didn't really incur any problems (except for the video card issue you noted, i.e., frames).I went through a power supply "trial by fire" experience early in the summer which resulted in the new Antec. This too initially masked itself as a video card issue. I guess I can troubleshoot this the same way I did the power supply issue. Run out to the store, buy a PS or video card, and see if the issue persists. This time though, I'm more inclined to try the video card first. Thanks and I'll keep you posted.Ed Lin, D.O.S.

Hey Alex,I figured out my problem last night. I had forgotten about a "shimmering" fix I had toyed with based on a long post at this site. There were two files that were copied into the main FS9 directory. I had renamed them from *.dll to *.jlg (my real initials) to disable them, so I thought. However, once I totally deleted them, my problem went away. I had never experienced that before. Usually, renaming the file type disables files from being called by the system.I went ahead though and bought the new video card -- the x850 pro. WOW! It's like day and night from the standard 9800 I had been flying. It did increase frames by a few, images are sharper and overall performance is greatly increased -- well worth the (discount) price! It's more than I expected. With the 2405 monitor now and the new card allowing me to run FS9 at full resolution, I don't know if I'll ever be seen by other human beings again. :-jumpy Ciao for now. Thanks for your time by the way!!!Ed Lin, D.O.S.

Hi Ed,Thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear all is working fine now and that your are enjoying the screen. I start to wish I had bought a 850 pro instead of my 7800GT. The driver gives me some issues and I seem to have way to much blurries for a system of this caliber. Oh well.. :)Cheers,Alex YSSY

Alex, what's your processor speed? If you're talking blurries with photoreal scenery, i.e., Mega, I think it's a way of life. I find the only way around the blurries in the Mega scenery is pretty much as detailed in the Mega manuals. Still, when traveling faster than 200 knots, with real weather clouds, AI turned on, I will get them. But when I'm indeed flying below 150 on approach in a heavy or flying a small plane, the detail sharpens and comes out.The blurries do seem to be a tad less with the new card but no, they are far from gone!Ed Lin
