November 1, 200520 yr I use the UK VFR Photographic scenery and, as with the majority of Photographic scenery, uses a vast amount of bmp's, each - 43kb in size. The VFR scenery comes in four volumes, each split into three folders as follows -VFGM_PhotoSceneryVol1_1VFGM_PhotoScenery_Vol1_2VFGM_PhotoScenery_Vol1_3What I have done is condense the twelve scenery folders containing the bgl's into one scenery folder and the twelve texture folders, each containing an average of 14,000 43kb .bmp's into one texture folder. The twelve texture folders also contain 1000's of Autogen .agn files that have long file names ie:010331321203232an.agnSome of the texture folders contained 22,000 files including 6,000 or more .agn files. I won't go into my reasons for making one large directory but the results have proved very encouraging. The load time from FS start up have reduced, the reloading of flight situations has reduced and the stutter associated with flying between the VFR border volumes has gone.I have a dedicated partition for the VFR scenery which was operating on a FAT32 file system and because of the long file names and quantity involved, used convert.exe to convert the partition to NTFS (WinXP Pro) I have 2x 1gig Corsair memory, Raptor 74gig and x2 4800 AMD.The questions, asked of me, are as follows -1. Converting from FAT32 to NTFS results in a different NTFS set-up in terms of cluster size, disk arrangement, etc. to partitioning an NTFS disk from scratch. It's possible that the results you're getting are only typical of a converted disk, not one created from scratch.2. Will other versions of Windows handle the number of files just as well?3. Is this solution dependent on having a certain amount of main system memory? Will users without this minimum struggle?I have lower spec machines, with the same VFR Photographic scenery installed, that I'm contemplating lumping all the relevant files together and would appreciate any observations, advice and general info on file systems that would improve the running of Photo'scenery please.Shep
