Installing new drivers

Hi All,I have a nvidia 6800gt GC. currently with the 66.93 drivers, I am trying to update the drivers, I used the Driver cleaner program to uninstall old ones, But everytime when I install the new ones I get an error message saying that the parameter is incorrect, Doesn't matter what version I tried to install, 77.77, 77.81 etc.. Still the same, I've read a lot of post concerning updating drivers, I ran the cleaner in safe mode, downloaded drivers with accelerator turned off, Tried just about everything, pretty much ready to give it up..
