November 20, 200520 yr HI guys,Until recently, on my display.cfg, I have the usual and known trick to add the name of our actual graphics card and the driver that I was poiting there, was 'nv4_disp.dll' or something like that, that was there since my Nvidia Geforce2, and then for GForce4 and now for the 6800GT.I must say, that after I change to this new card, I was little disappointed with the improvements that I had, because they seemed a little "shy"!! I improved RAM, motherboard, graphics card, but I now know that I need to improve my Pentium IV 2.66 to see more drastic improvements. And in some situations, I noticed that in previous configuration, the game seemed more smooth.A few days ago, I changed that line on display.cfg file, to use one of the ASUS V-7700 drivers that are on the file, and, my goodness!!! The improvements in graphics quality were absolutly amazing!!!! crispy, clear, very very smooth and beautifull scenery and aircraft textures!! And in performance I could see a slight improvement too, but not too much. Now the problem, is that after that change, I'm having little small "side-effects" that I can't understand correctly:1. the user input keys on keyboard, sometimes delay a bit to perform! And the strange thing is that FS doesn't hang or hold. If for example I change view, sometimes, FS continues to run smoothly on the same view, and only 2 to 5 seconds after changes the view. No hangs no delays what so ever!! But it's not all the time! Another exemple is in FSPassengers for example, if I press L key to change altimeter and press normally the numbers to the new QNH, sometimes you hear the delay of the voice "accepting" the new QNH!!2. Sometimes after plenty of hours of flying, like 4 or 5 flights in a row, even with the same aircraft, sometimes aircraft textures simply disappear!! Specially on fuselage. Not the tail!!!!! Weird!!!And sometimes is the AI aircraft textures and not mine!!!!So, basically, I would like someone to enlight me, WICH FS DRIVER should I use for my GF6800GT card!! What's the secret to choose the rigth one!! I looked on Microsoft site, and I couldn't see a clue to this issue!!! Why Microsoft is always so "blind" to this support for future hardware, and stick only with the one that is available at launch time!!! It's always the same with uncle Bill mates!!Cheers guys, and thanks in advance.Miguel
November 20, 200520 yr FS ships no drivers for use with graphic cards. Unless you count DirectX on the original CD's. The display .cfg is only there to identify the make and model of the card and set the initial presets in the options menus. After that, it's down to you!And it's a little unfar to ask a three year old game to recognise a twelve month old card that wasn't even thought of when FS was released!I'd just try some new drivers. Which one's are you running now? Some of the 8x.xx drivers really don't suit some types of 6800GT card.Allcott
November 20, 200520 yr Hi Allcott,Sorry but I think I didn't understand!! As far as I know, something FS does with display.cfg in terms of loading some specific drivers! And the proof to that, is that I changed the lines refering the drivers below the reference to my display card, and only that!! And the real differences on my display were from the night to day!!So, if you are telling me that changing the display.cfg shouldn't change anything on FS, I'm sorry, but I think you are wrong, since I know this trick about 2 or 3 months after FS9 was launch!!The drivers that I'm using is the last ones from Omega. The 8x or 7x from NVidia never liked them. Too many "glitchs" inside FS. I always prefer 45.xx or 56.xx despite some little loss on performance.CheersMiguel
November 21, 200520 yr Miguel, I am not wrong. There are no drivers for graphics cards included with FS. It's easy to check, just look for any .inf mentions for specific cards in the FS folder or anywhere else under the FS banner. (don't bother, there aren't any!)What display.cfg does is ask the game to use generic display configurations, some of which may offer increased quality in some cards, but by pure dumb luck. And anyway, I've never seen any evidence that the snake oil tweak you mention ever worked - on every system I have seen it on when you open the fs9.cfg there is a second entry for the display settings, which clearly overrides the first. Again, how could Microsoft possibly introduce `drivers` when the game was released, your card and mine weren't even on the drawing board at that time? Also, MS work wth suppliers who create drivers, they do not create drivers for non-MS products. MS do not make graphic cards.Anyway, your problem relates to the age of the drivers you're using. 66.93 are the ones Omega based his mods on, suggest you try 77.xx and later. simply create a System Restore point before you start, then you can alwas go back. Also, there are several good threads in this forum showing how to properly install new drivers for FS use - there is a need to delete the lines in fs9.cfg relating to your display settings to force FS to recognise new drivers.Try that and see if what happens. November 21, 200520 yr Hi Allcott,I'm sorry but re-reading my message, turns out to me that I didn't expressed myself correctly. My appologies. In terms of graphics, I'm not an expert, and hardly a begginer. Of course it was always strange to me that FS would load some kind of drivers differently of Windows drivers. But I always looked to display.cfg as a guide to FS of what drivers were indeed loaded in Windows, and "guide" FS to some kind of "fine.tunning". And this last change I did, in fact impressed me!! The quality change was incredible, despite the fact I was running for 3 or 4 months the Omega drivers. If was not the keyboard problem, I would stay with them, but this issue is quite annoying, so I want to get ride of it. I installed already the 81.85 drivers. What I'm intriged now, is that on good payware quality sceneries (Flytampa KSEA for example), I'm always seeing some undifined straight lines, or the building edges not being well straight drawn, or the wings of AI planes and so on... I don't know if you know what I mean!! I don't know if is this that is call "shimmering"!After 81.85 installed, I made severall experiences with AA, filtering, with the drivers, and in FS. And I ask this: should I activated AA 4x and AF 16x or 8x, and deactivated completly inside FS, vice-versa, or activated both?? (if it has some different result!!)What I saw is that I read a lot that the cards drivers perform always better the AA and AF, however the last test I made, I had both activated, and the results were better than with then deactivated in FS!! So I'm little confused!!And that "shimmering" doesn't go away!!! But on the previous configuration I insist: I had no shimering!!! Because of the drivers, or because of the display.cfg tweak, for some days I had almost perfect image with good performance!!!I'm still didn't found what I'm looking for!!Thanks AllcottCheersMiguel
