December 6, 200520 yr Hi all,Ive been following your forum for the last few years and been flightsimming since the Atari XE,but have only now had a confusing enough situation that I thought some of you guys might be able to help me out with.I'm running FS on a laptop: a 2.8 Pentium 4 with 512 DDR 333 with a Mobility 9700 (latest omega drivers). My FS setup used to be about 40 gigs then I just decided that im gonna just fligh in the UK vfr and regional and hacked away the old and now fs is really smoothish (locked at 25fps). I had a big blurries problem which I fought with for about a month doing everything possible and only finding the resolution with a change of graphics card drivers (old omega to new omega). Now my querie? I have 512ddr333 on two sticks of 256 filling up the two slots on the laptop. My boss just gifted me a 512 266 stick, so to place it I would have to remove one of my sticks and therefor (I think) be running 768 at 266 as this is the max speed of one of the sticks. All seems stable even with the different types and speeds of RAM and I have done lots of tests and benchmarks and was hoping to see a big difference but to my dismay:512DDR333 benchmarks slightly faster than 768DDR266. I tested using Xmark7 and performance test from download.com.I thought that these benchmarks might not be final as this is a quest for a smoother flightsim and FS works by loading lotsof textures into memory and then displaying them but then again you have the ram speed that moves the textures from and to memory. So what do you folks thing will be better for FS2004.512 at 333 or 768 at 256.My tests are just too vague...Thanks Steven
March 22, 200620 yr Still no reply:(Since this time the laptops been at acer repair an awfull lot... First time a new motherboard. Second Time a new Video Cable and just this week its been away for another new mb. Acer, for when you really dont need a PC but buy one anyway. Luckly I've got my wifes Dell laptop for messing around with but its not up to scratch for FS. Anyway the laptop will be back this week and im itching to get restore the ghost and get flying again. Im (the wife) not willing to fork out on any new upgrades or for a new pc untill at least 6 months into FSX so what do you guys think, the two 256 sticks or the slower 512 with one 256? Both seem stable.Cheers
March 22, 200620 yr I'd recommend using the 512 + 256. It will run at the slower 266 speed, but no doubt memory bus speed is the least of your problems. You need to get the system stable and performing as advertised first.Good luck,Greg
