Radeon 9600 Pro advice needed.

Featured Replies

I used to be a long time Nvidia user. I used to run a GeForce 4 Ti4200 128 DDR. I have recently bought a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro. so im not a big spender ok!anyways, i have noticed a slight drop in performance with the radeon. to be more accurate, a change in performance.I need some serious advice, so bear with me here. here is my current rig.Athlon XP 2400+ on a K7S5a ECS mobo.1024 MB DDR ramWestern Digital 40 GB 7200 rpm 8 meg buffer HDSapphire Radeon 9600 Pro 128 DDR.With my old video card I could run 1024 rez, 2x Cuincunx AA and 4x AF and have a stable 18 FPS (locked) in most areas. Scenery and Autogen both Dense, and major cities would dip to about 13-14. not too bad. It was weather that would kick its ####. Big clouds would bring the frames down to 11. (medium high weather settings, DTX clouds)Now, put in the new card. install latest catalyst drivers. Set AA to 2x with temporal AA and AF to x4. Mipmapping to high performance. It seems to handle the weather just fine, the big clouds dont slow it down, but some strange "new" things happen.1. Big cities and airports put a bigger frame hit on this card, dipping to about 11-12. 2. This framerate seems independant of resolution. Going from 1024 to 1280 still produces 11-12 frames in complex areas. Shouldnt 1024 be faster than 1280???now, on a technical note I know the Ti4200 has 4x2 pipelines and the 9600 Pro has 4x1. But the clock speed on the radeon is almost Twice as fast. How can I get the most out of this card with FS2004?? I feel like ive lost a little speed.any advice guys?

Perhaps start by disabling Temporal AA? I agree with your idea that the 9600 should outperform the GF4-Ti with lots of clouds. Maybe you have reminants of the old drivers or some other settings aren't optimal? Good luck and kind regards Jaap
