Crash course in Video Cards

Featured Replies

Hi all,With Christmas just past, I find the need to upgrade my video card to use a new game or two given me by the kids. FS9 compatibility is a real consideration (and my system has been marginal anyway). The problem is my level of expertise and understanding of options and requirements, especially regarding FS9.For the new games, I KNOW I need a "3D Hardware Accelerator Card - 100% DiectX 9.0b compatible 32MB hardware accelerator w/full T&L capabilities" and that ATI Radeon cards, all nVdia GeForce chipsets and Matrox Parhelia cards are supported.Following a search on the forums, it seems that FS9 would also support the noted cards.Unfortunately, price IS a major consideration. It appears to me that the ATI Radeon 9250 would be suitable for installation in a PCI slot on my existing computer and, at least as I understand it, would meet the requirements of the new games (offering 256MB of video memory and requiring just 64 MB RAM on the system). Will the ATI Radeon 9250 be adequate for FS9?My system is sub-par for this day and age:AMD 1.8g processorRAM 256MBXP HomeS3 Graphics ProSavage DDR with 32 MB RAMI typically fly older iron (DC9, BAC 1-11, 2D steam cockpits) with limited weather and sliders pretty far to the left, as you might imagine. Reasonable into smaller fields like KPWM but a fast "slideshow" on an ILS into KBOS.I have lived with marginal performance to this point and simply CAN'T go "top of the line" with processor, RAM and video; however, an upgrade of some kind (in this order, I think: video card, ram, processor) is finally required. Is the ATI Radeon 9250 a reasonable card, fully compatible with FS9?Would it offer any marginal frame-rate increase, given the obvious processor limitations I have at this time?I appreciate your ("video card for dummies" version, please) feedback as time permits.Bob
