Related to the defrag thread

Featured Replies

Well, not related to the defrag thread, but relevant to it insofar as loading times are concerned! One other thing I also noticed recently, I purged my FS2004/Texture main folder of all the textures no longer in use. A lot of `clever` developers use the main texture folder as a repository for textures to reduce file sizes, as one set of textures can be used for multiple aircraft instances in the aircraft folder.Unfortunately, not a single one of them has been clever enough to devise an uninstaller that then removes their textures if you delete the aircraft. As a result, you can end up with a heap of texture files that are, quite literally, a waste of space after you thought you'd removed al traces. Not only that, they significantly affect loading times when you start the sim, almost as much as scenery addons. So it is worth a purge, but just remember you may or may not get a clue from the filename as to what is in there and don't delete stuff if you're not sure. I removed the wonderful Rick Piper 748 to a storage `hangar` and realised that many megs of textures from that remained in the main FS texture folder which is what started this. I now see a whole heap of addons doing this - **, DreamFleet, Flight 1, Real Air. Many of the top developers. So is there any way to get file/folder associations from Texture files? Otherwise, it's all a bit trial and error! I had to restore a backup texture folder, then track the aircraft I'd added since then, comapre the filenames then delete what was no longer needed, after backing up the original `heavy` texture folder in case I made a mistake. All a bit complicated! But removing those textures speeded up not only the first load of FS by about 10 seconds, but also the the appearance of the aicraft folder in the sim and the speed with which aircraft load from the selection menu. So after a good defrag, there's nothing better than a nice purge!Perhaps developers might also consider including a file list of any and all files that will NOT be removed if their uninstaller is used.Allcott
