October 16, 200619 yr Hi All,Well, since I preordered FSX I am patiently waiting for the 17th, and in the meantime I've been flying the demo. I get acceptable results on the FSX demo with my system (see specs below), but know from posts on this board that I'll have to do some tweaking on the full version at larger airports and cities. In looking over my specs below, I'd appreciate your advice on any cost-effective upgrades I could do prior to Vista/dX10. At present, I am considering1) adding another 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM@ 667MHz (Crucial $163)but I am uncertain if I should upgrade video cards now, or just wait for the DX10 cards next year?2) Shelve my 2 GeForce 6800s for a single GeForce 7-series card?3) Any other upgrades based upon the specs below? Thanks in advance for your help,Steve J.Manassas, VABasic System Specs: Dell XPS 600 Gen5 P4 650 3.4GHz (800FSB) w/HT 2MB Cache, 1 GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM @ 667MHz, Dual 256MB PCI Expressx16 GeForce 6800 in SLI w/.9147 drivers 1280x1024/32/85Hz, 250GB Serial ATA HD (7200rpm) 72% free, SB Audigy 2 ZS, Windows XP Media Ed SP2, DirectX 9.0c, Viewsonic A95f 19in, CHProducts Yoke and Pedals, O&O Defrag(Name), PC Pitstop Optimize.
October 17, 200619 yr I'd go for more RAM as cheap and useful. It's a reasonably high end system and any improvement in the other components would give only marginal improvement until the DX10 cards are released in November. Unless of course you have the cash to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo system. That would give you the largest performance improvement but doing that now would be risky as we still don't know the exact requirements of the DX10 cards. You might find yourself forking out again for a mew MB or PSU to run the new cards and that would be painful. In summary, go the RAM or wait for DX10 would be my view.Cheers,Noel. 11th Gen i9-11900K @ 3.5GHz | nVidia GeForce RTX 3080 | Corsair 64 GB RAM | Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB | Asus 27" RoG G-Sync Track IR5 | Thrustmaster Warthog | CH Products Pedals
October 17, 200619 yr Thanks for you response, Noel.Hopefully it won't be long before I get my preordered copy of FSX and I can see how my system performs. My biggest uncertainty is how well the GeForce 6800 video cards (Dual 256MB PCI Expressx16 in SLI mode w/.9147 drivers) will perform? Also, regarding SLI, I have seen several posts saying that SLI only gives a slight performance increase at higher resolutions, but in "The Officical Guide" to FSX, which is put out by the ACES team, they recommend not only greater than 1 GB RAM (2-4), but two NVidia GTX 7800 512MB cards RUNNING IN SLI MODE.I'm confused that MS Game Studios would recommend using SLI mode for FSX when all of the posts I've read see little benefit. I doubt that I would have the $ to spring right now for TWO 7800 GTX cards, given new DX10 cards on the horizon. But do you think replacing my two 256MB 6800 cards (either running one or SLI) with a single 512MB 7800 card would make that much improvement on my system?
