Video Card Ram

Featured Replies

I have a 9800pro 128MB card. While I can get a satisfying performance fps wise by careful sliders settings, I wonder if I could improve this by making a small investment in a card with more ram? In particular I have serious problems panning left and right (the fsx.cfg bufferpool tweek does help with this but causes other side effects) and regularly in general flight my fps drops from around 20fps to below 5 for a few seconds. There are also some stutters. Last night for the first time I was just flying around and all my scenary went blurry at once. No idea what happened there.Memstatus reports that I can run below 256MB for the most part, however I've been turning on more clouds lately and that is pushing it up further. Certainly if I use the bufferpool tweek I'll hit around 350MB.A card like a 7600GS 512MB is relatively cheap and offers a modest performance boost compared with the 9800pro. That may not translate into better fps, but more video memory may help. What do you think? Worth the investment? I'm planning a complete mega upgrade next year when all the new technology is arrived and settled with fsx.

I was sort of wondering the same, if a medium priced card like the nVidea 7600 or 7800 would do FSX any justice. From the shopping I've done lately, I think right now is a bad time to do major upgrades. We're in a transition period where there are some great cards coming out, but there aren't many motherboards to accomodate.

I look at this two ways1) Yes, bad time for a major upgrade. I'm quite happy to wait another 6-12 months to find out the impact from Vista, Dual core and DX10 on fsx2) On the other hand, good time for a dx9 card upgrade. Recent ATI announcements will hopefully push Nvidia prices down during November and perhaps there will be a bargain. Enough perhaps just to keep me going over the next year.
