November 27, 200619 yr Hi AllJust bought FX deluxe today and got a problem. Just wondering if anyone can help.My specs.Athlon 1.2 Tbird Processork7s5a MB1GB PC2100 SDRam120 GB Hard DriveGeForce FX5200 128MB AGP cardDirect 9.0cwin xp pro sp1I got my base unit about 5 years ago and win xp was already preloaded. I subsequently downloaded Sp1 and have been running with that for a little while. My problem is that i insert disc 1 into the dvd drive and the light flashes for a few seconds then absolutely nothing happens. No sound of the DVD going round.I am just wondering if i need to have sp2 loaded and installed before the disc will even think about loading. I know that the dvd is working as i tried another dvd addon for my FS2004 and it loaded ok. Does the disc check the pc to see if sp2 is installed before it even thinks about loading?Any advice would be appreciated.Regardsflyingjock
November 27, 200619 yr SP2 is required. But frankly, your system is so far down the `obsolescent` road now, I wouldn't even bother trying to load FSX.Never mind the minimum spec on the box, you need a 3-gig class CPU and a 6600 or above class GPU to even get FSX to run.Allcott
November 27, 200619 yr Hi AllcottThanks for taking the time to get back to me. I suppose ill keep this pc for fs2004 and give it to my son and speak nicely to the mrs to see if i can justify a new one for us.Tom
November 27, 200619 yr Before you commit Tom, have a good look through the forum to see that is happening on the hardware front - FSX is showing all the usual traits of being a law unto itself when it comes to hardware - to the point where the developers have committed to fixing it with a patch due in early `07. Although the rest of the computer market has moved to dual core CPU and SLI for multiple graphic cards, none of these offer any significant benefits for FSX alone. So you have to be careful on the price/benefit ratio. At this point, I think we would all agree only that the new Intel Dual Core represent fantastic value for money and about the best you're going to get to give you reasonable results is the E6600.If you plan on buying a new rig, watch that you are given the option of Windows XP or Vista. And choose XP for now, especially if you can get a voucher for a free update to Vista later. Although FSX is designed for Vista, performance under Vista at this early stage is LOWER than under XP, but of course the potential is greater. E66002 gig RAMSoundblaster X-Fi Fatality250gb HD x 2 in a RAID configurationGeForce 8800 GTS600w power supplyShould give you enough performance to enjoy FSX at least part of the way up the sliders, but also put you in a food position for FSX development as the DX10 patch (separate from the performance patch) will add new features to FSX, but for that you will need a DX10 compatible grpahics card and Windows Vista - with the specs above you are `DX10 ready` whether you choose XP or Vista as the OS at this point.Hope this helps.Allcott
November 28, 200619 yr Good evening Allcott or whatever time it is where you are. Thanks for the good advice. I suppose i let my mind rule my head a bit when i bought FX. Id read on some of the newsgroups that some people with similar configs to mine had it installed, up and running. But ive also read that the game is very fickle in that some people even with the latest all singing, all dancing rigs are experiencing what amounts to a side show.Anyway ill wait till the dust settles and see what comes out after xmas, as usually the manufacturers flood the market in the run up to xmas and just as everyone is getting to grips with their pc, they bring out a big and newer and cheaper model.Oh the joys of being a flight simmer. So thanks for all your advice.RegardsTom
November 29, 200619 yr I have a Acer Aspire Laptop 1.6Ghz 512MB of RAM 64MB Mobile intel chipset, and FSX runs fine but i will admit i want a major and i mean mayjor upgrade...
