RAM BAM THANK YOU MAM

Hi,After ensuring what kind of RAM I needed I went out and bought a new 512 stick to put next to my other 512 stick. After loading FS9 I got a CTD with the attached error message. Initially I took out the new stick and flightsim seemed to work fine. Although, I didnt fly for too long just took off and leveled out at 5000 ft. Now, after a week of searching the net and forums, I took out the new stick and I am still getting CTD. Its driving me mental. The error box is a small XP style box with "ERROR - FS9" at the top then inside the box "Failed to read from file". I swapped the RAM into different slots to no avail. I am hoping to avoid having to reinstall FS9 as I have all my PAI, and some add on scenery installed. Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.Jamie (Aussie in China)(Local airport ZSPD Pudong, Shanghai, China)AMD 64 3200+ 2.0 GHZ512 VDATA RAMNVIDIA 7300GTWIN XP

Doesn't sound like a problem with the new 512 stick. Make sure your virtual memory (Page file) setting is set to "System Managed Size". Don't reinstall FS9 without first deleting the FS9.cfg, restarting the sim, and letting the system rebuild the FS9.cfg. Addon scenery could be causing the conflict too if textures are somehow corrupted. Uncheck the scenery in the Scenery Library and see if that fixes the problem (if above recommendations didn't work). Hope this helps.Best regards,Jim

Hi Jim,Thank you for your reply. I had already deleted and created a new FS9.CFG file. And unchecked the scenery, sorry should have mentioned that. I uninstalled a program called emule and just completed 2 hours flying without a hitch. Fingers crossed. When it all works its awesome aint it! Just on another note, how are my system specs are they average or a bit better than average? Thanks again.

"how are my system specs are they average or a bit better than average?"Well, let's hope you have fixed your problem. Nothing worse than an occasional CTD to ruin your enjoyment. It looks like you have an average to a little above avg system to run FS9. You'll have some issues with FSX though as it is really CPU intensive. If you plan on keeping the system you might think about upgrading to another gig of RAM and updating the video card. I have both FS9 and FSX installed on my current system and have ordered a new system which should arrive soon -- the Dell XPS 710H2C (http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/xps?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs). I'm also getting the Dell 30" monitor....Best regards,Jim

Hi again Jim,I knew I spoke too soon. I did another couple of flights. The first went without a hitch. The second, I experienced a CTD when in spot view I used the hotkeys Ctrl+w to swing around and look at the ai around me. I did have the simulator at 4x normal speed at the time. Apart from that I have bad stutters. It is almost like another program or something :-S is interrupting FS9. When the problem initially happened I would apply full power the engines would roar and then after a few minutes (the amount of time always changed) the sound would break down into pieces so I could only hear a dull roar from the engines. Now, FS9 seems to be ok as long as I dont tax it too much. I never had this problem before and I can't put my finger on any new add ons that I have installed lately :-S Sorry, but do you have any other suggestions? Thanks again.Jamie.

"I experienced a CTD when in spot view I used the hotkeys Ctrl+w to swing around and look at the ai around me. I did have the simulator at 4x normal speed at the time. Apart from that I have bad stutters."Well, from what you have written you may be experiencing problems with your video card drivers. Have you checked out the CTD forum here on AVSIM? Perhaps you'll see where someone else had a similar problem and how he/she fixed it. A bad installation of video card drivers has caused several CTD's in the past for FS9 simmers. They simply uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers and the problem was fixed (the lucky ones!). If you have built-in video in your motherboard (MB), make sure it is disabled. May sound simple, but I have read where others have both enabled. The same goes for sound. You didn't mention a sound card in your system specs so you may be using on-board sound? If so, it is highly recommended you purchase a sound card and disable any built-in MB sound. Make sure your video/sound card drivers are up-to-date too. Have you done a DirectX diagnosis yet (start run and type in dxdiag, then enter). A diagnosis may pinpoint a problem with your video card or sound card. I would also look at the Windows XP Event Viewer and review any application errors. If any error references your sound or video card, you can probably be sure it's a driver problem. Lastly, I would defrag the hard drive if you haven't done so recently. This will speed up access to those textures and maybe that will stop your crashes. Good luck! (Sorry, I have ran out of possible solutions and hope others will jump in with some recommendations if you can't get your problem fixed).Best regards,Jim

Hi Jim,Thanks again :) I did all as suggested and still experience CTD :( I just feel bad for my passengers on my A340-600 trying to get from EGLL - ZSPD LOL. I will keep reading the forums and see if I can crack it.Cheers,Jamie.
