Moving to a new PC - Need your advise!

Featured Replies

Hello fellow simmers,I'm building a new rig now to allow me future transition from FS9 to FS10. But at the moment, until more add-ons will be shifted toward FS10, I will want to have both on my new system. So before doing anything I will appreciates your insight for the following questions: 1. At the moment, the new PC is supposed to accommodate one 320GB HD. How do you suggest me to internally divide the partitions? A special one for OS (XP at the moment, until the expected DX10 patch at the end of the year) and another two, one for FS9 and one for FS10? Any suggested arrangement will be welcomed. 2. Is it recommended to split the two simulators between two physical different HD?3. I assume it's better to have a clean install of FS9. However, in order to avoid the trouble of re-installing all the add-on's is it possible just to copy the FS9 directory from the old computer? Any other files that I need to copy from elsewhere?Any further tips and advices will be appreciated. Shay

Shay, because it's a new system I'd recommend doing a clean install of FS9 including the FS9.1 update. You can then slave your old hard drive and copy all your FS9 folders across...when it asks do you want to replace existing files ..say no. However if some of your add-ons made registry entries when they were installed they may not run properly so you may have to re-install those. As for should you partition or not....I have both FS9 and FSX installed on the same drive without any problems. Because they are never run concurrently I can't think of any advantages to separating them.Having the OS on a separate partition again seems to make no difference..I have one PC with a partition for the OS and another where it's all one drive. However the 2 PC have different specs so its difficult to be objective, but I wouldn't say one ran any better than the other. What is important is that you keep the hard-drive defragged and close any unneccessary processes whilst running FSX.RegardsJim

Partitioning is fine, just don't make your C drive too small. I made that mistake when I first discovered partitioning and it forced me to eventually wipe the HD and start over. Even though you can install programs to other drives, they always require some space on the system drive.
