March 19, 200719 yr Hello everybody,After updating my pc I stay behind with a nasty problem.I had a setup MSI K9N SLI - AMD Athlon64 2x 4600+ and 2 Gb RAM and I did an update to an AMD Athlon64 2x 6000+ and 4 Gb Ram.After the update, I did a complete reinstall of my OS (winXP pro) with all updates (no IE 7 though).I also did a complete reinstall of Fs9 with all addon's I had before. At first, the sim ran like a dream but after a few days, it stopped working altogether. When I doubleclick the desktop shortcut, the splashscreen comes alive for about ten seconds and then disappears. When checking the taskmanager while starting the sim, I see the program starting and disappearing...So far, the only remedy I have found is reinstalling EVERYTHING from scratch. (with everything I mean OS and FS)I use the latest drivers for motherboard, latest bios, stable drivers for graphic card and soundcard. I tried deleting the Fs9.cfg and letting it rebuild (which doesn't happen by the way) so there's something happening but I can't find a clue.Even the logs that are kept on the pc don't make me any wiser...Is there anybody out there who can shed a light on this one?All assistance is more than welcome...Luc BrusselmansBelgium
March 19, 200719 yr Have you tried it with only 2GB RAM? XP does not support 4GB RAM and some motherboards get very unstable with more than 2GB of certain RAM chips. Remove 2GB and see if that makes a differenceJim
March 20, 200719 yr Jim,thanks fo the reply...Now, you've opened my eyes (a little). I thought that XP did support 4 Gb of RAM (Vista more). Now, I will give your suggestion a try. Maybe it's not XP having trouble with 4 Gb but is it my motherboard that's acting funny. It's a hard fault to find because, until yesterday and since the last reinstall begin March, Fs acted quite normal (with the 4 Gb installed). My first guess was FsAutostart or EnditAll2 because always the trouble began after using one of those programs. Closing down services that should have been left running can cause some trouble like mine, but... I thought that rebooting the PC afterwards did a reset of those services and then this fault should have been gone. Not so in my experience. I'll keep on looking but I sure want to try it with 2 Gb instead of 4 Gb. Maybe I can add another Gb later when the system runs stable. Thanks for the assistanceLuc Brusselmans
March 20, 200719 yr XP does support 4Gb of ram, only 2Gb for applications tho. Some mobo's seem to have problems supporting more than 2Gb. Some times a BIOS update will do the trick. With my setup XP sees 2.3Gb out of the 4Gb in my system. That being said I have no problems with 4Gb installed. Vista-32 bit sees 2.8Gb? I haven't installed 64 bit Ultimate on my machine yet. I'm told that it will see all 4Gb?You may also have a memory problem. I would google memtest-86.org. Download the CD-Rom version, it's bootable, in BIOS set your boot priority, 1st boot device your CD-Rom drive you want to use. Usually under "Advanced Chipset Settings" and reboot. Before that tho, install only 1 stick of memory into slot A1. Also it's a good idea to disable USB 2.0 in BIOS while testing. Run memtest for at least 4 passes. If you have errors under memtest-86 replace the memory stick. Also, when using more than 1 stick they all have to match. Different speeds, some times different lot numbers etc., are made using different IC's, wont work right!I use Corsair XMS2 TwinX 2048 6400c4 x2, no problems, solid and stable as a rock.
March 21, 200719 yr Buck, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I removed the extra RAM for now and I am going through a complete reinstall at the moment. Fortunate that I have a few PC's at home to replace the defeult one so I can continue to monitor the forums. After the reinstall, I'll be back with some findings...Luc Brusselmmans
