Hirecently bought this printer,seemed a good idea to have one to print maps and approach plates.when i try to install it..the computer finds it,then i get an error...Specified port is unknown..i've tried new drivers,i tried searching the web for an answer,but although it seems quite common,noone can solve it..apart from suggesting deleting the usb ports in the device manager...still the same.. anyone been able to solve this problem here cheers steveWinXP home edition latest updatescore duo 6700Abit AW9D max mobo2gb 6700 mem

Hi Steve. Found this on the web. Seems to be a well known isue. Have you followed the steps exactly?-------------------------------------To resolve this:Access the Device Manager:1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel (Windows 2000/XP: Start, Control Panel).2. Click on System.3. Select the Device Manager tab (Windows 2000/XP: Hardware, Device Manager). Correct the conflict or unknown device: Insert your printer CD into the computer. Exit the software installation/setup program. Double-click on the conflict area. Note: This will only work if the conflict is in Printers, Scanners (Imaging Devices), or Other Devices. Select the Driver tab and then click on Update Driver. Click Next. The computer should search the CD for the correct driver. This will allow the computer to find the correct port to print to. When the process is finished, restart your computer. Select the correct port to print to: Click Start, Settings, Printers (Windows 2000/XP: Start, Printers and Faxes). Right click on the Lexmark printer that you are trying to fix. Click Properties. Click the Details tab (Windows 2000/XP: Ports). Under Print to the following port, select USB.-------------------------------------Hope this helps :-)Ulf B

Hi ulfthanks for taking the time to look this up for me..but it still didn't work.the printer is not listed in the device manager,even though it says that is has found a lexmark Z35,when i start computer or plug in the usb cable.also there is no printer in the Printer faxes box in the control panel.computer just doesn't seem to recognize the usb port that the printer is assigned to. cheers steve

Seems very odd and beats me. Have you tried the Add printer short cut in the Printers and faxes box?Ulf B

HiYes Ulf i have..it's wierd,does everything like it should until white box comes up with "specified port is unknown" as if XP doesn't know which USB port printer is in. i've tried 2 different printers.both the same error.one HP(sisterinlaw's)and my one.removed all the old drivers. thanks anyway steve
