January 23, 200818 yr Hi everyone, intel skulltrail has been talked alot about lately but i just want to state my opinion. For so much money you can buy two processors and 4 Graphics cards. A total of already about $6000 not including cooling, PC case, hard drive or the power supply and motherboard. Adding all of these in will bring the total cost to about 8-10K, Power supplies that you would need to run all of this wont even be out yet. 4 GPU and 2 CPU you would need like a 2500 watt power supply and the max at the moment is 1500. The skulltrails overclocking capability is terrible. As it takes a -70 Ccooler to get a 3.2GHz Penryn to 4GHz. So for those of you using water you will only be able to get to 3.4GHz or so. Not to mention that you will actually need two coolers to overclock with. Money, Money, Money. we have all seen minor increases with more cores as we started to move to quad core so 8-core will give a little bit of increase especially in programs like PCMark 06. But for us simmers its going to make not a lot of difference. You can get higher clocks on Single CPU Boards. Finally there are two choices of CPU for skulltrail. Because it is a workstation socket the only processors that are compatible are the Pentium 4 Xeons (Pentium is bad with FSX and has bad overclocking) and the $1500 QX9775 which you will have to get 2 of so really your only choice for fsx is the $3000 package of 2 qx9775. In my opinion i dont want to spend 10K on something that cant even run FSX at max settings. With a normal QX9650 on a normal board its possible to achieve 5GHz on water cooling. Half the price of Skulltrail and better performance in FSX. I think im gonna stick with my Single Slot Motherboard that i can run fsx at max with for now. And the video of CES 2008 with the 4GHz Skulltrail and FSX was not at max settings, yet it was still lagging a bit. No way am i buying a skulltrail. If you want a 4GHZ Skulltrail machine you will have to buy Dual $1000 Phase Change coolers. And no, 2 processors doesnt give double the performance. It has been tried before and was a massive failure as some people were actually getting half the performance of a single board. So if you've read this and then spend $10000 on a skulltrail system dont go whinging because you didnt get the performance you wanted. its not my fault. Remember this is an opinion not a factual thing, so dont argue if you dont like what im writing. Jourdog
