March 23, 200818 yr Does anyone know of where to get one and how well they work?I'm guessing that my wifes puter suffered a major brown=out (house is surge protected, been hit and it works) because it killed everything..Sound card had leaky capticors...Vid card fails all mem tests...MotherBoard was replaced..and it still suffers...The reason I.m concerned is that I just bought us both new Digital Storm machines and I don't want this to happen to these.......Any help would be great.....
March 23, 200818 yr Against a brownout or blackout you need not just a surge protector but an uninterruptable powersupply (UPS) and probably a transformer to level out longer duration fluctuations.

March 23, 200818 yr http://www.apcc.com/index.cfm?isoCountryCode=usI use this one and have the router, modem and system all on it at the same time http://www.apcc.com/resource/include/techs...total_watts=200that one is not needed if all you need is enough time to shut down properly and isolate from surges/spikes correctly.. you can get a small one to alow that operation. However you do need to make sure it is able to handle the system completely in the event of a power loss. in that, you cant plug the monitor and everything into the smaller units. power strips are a complete joke
March 23, 200818 yr That is just what I need...Something with AVR,,,Automatic Voltage Regulation.......I found this for cheaper......http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...22802&CatId=233Wonder if it will do the job??????Thanks for the input.......
March 23, 200818 yr as I said it depends on your system and what it needs.. dont go by their rating for how long you can run.. that is based on genericsIf your running a power-tower, clocked and what'not, you need to figure out what it takes to keep everything alive for a certain period of time in order for proper shutdown to occurAs the same time, having a control cable connected to Windows for auto-shutdown when the battery starts to fade is another feature thats important.. in case you are not right there to kill the system.
March 23, 200818 yr well said...Don't think the one I found has enough voltage...The chart tells me I need 850 watts to perform correctly....So....Low end is out.......Top-Shelf is in..........Thanks for the advice......
March 23, 200818 yr If you need such systems (as with everything really) go for quality rather than cheap. It may work, it may not. If it doesn't the more expensive offerings will usually include insurance to reimburse the damage to the products connected to them, the cheap ones will not.The higher quality ones will also have better performance, being able to sustain larger fluctuations for a longer period.Remember you may be connecting thousands of dollars worth of equipment to the thing (if not more), with data that may be irreplacable.
March 23, 200818 yr this is actually a great chart...http://www.apcc.com/products/runtime_for_e...fm?upsfamily=23With my full load i have about 5 min.. under idle conditions and with everything attached that goes to 10-12 so you get an ideaand the comment about el'cheapo is correct.. you get what you pay for and no insurance
