8800 GT or GeForce 8800 Ultra?

Featured Replies

Tigerdirect is having a sale on the XFX GeForce Ultra 768MB for $199. Is it worth the $$$ or should I go with the 8800 GT. I know there are other cards out there but these are in my price range and will fit with my current system quite nicely.Thanks,C.

The ultra is currently one of the best boards for FSX so I would definitely get an ultra for FSX.It is also not bad for other games, although perhaps not as peppy in the very high end marketThe key is whether your processor and motherboard can sustain the data rate to keep the GPU fed.Cheers,Etienne

I'm running a Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13 GHZ with 2 GB of ram.Thanks,C.

>I'm running a Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13 GHZ with 2 GB of ram.>>Thanks,>C.Thats a lower end system if its not overclocked. Either card will work fine however if you do not overclock the 8800GT would probably be the better buy from the perspective of cost to performace with what you are runningThe 8800ultra will still run better than the GT in FSX even on your hardware but you wont be getting its full potential without clocking the system. When I say 'better even on your hardware' I do not mean by leaps and bounds. It will do better in heavy weather and large scenery areas no doubt about that but will be limited and held back by the CPU speed while rendering those scenes. So the choice is yours on this one. Another consideration is the future. If you intend to hold onto the card for a while and possibly upgrade CPU/Motherboard hardware in that time period the the 8800ultra may serve you better and be worth the price. The Ultra does the best job in FSX. For other modern games however its falling behind fast.

My system is not overclocked. I'm only interested in FSX for gaming and probably will be upgrading/building my own rig is the next few months. Sounds like the Ultra is the card.thanks,C.
