March 5, 200521 yr Flying through Baja California, I came to what I think is the tip of the penninsula. There is an airstrip there and I was wondering how I can find out which one it is. I'm sorry, I'm still learning the ins and outs of flying! I've tried opening the GPS dialog and clicked "nearest airport" but it doesn't come up with anything for this one. I assume it's because it doesn't have a tower. So, in general, if I'm flying around and exploring how can I tell where I am if I don't already know the VOR frequency (assuming it has one)? Thanks.
March 6, 200521 yr You can start fgfs with this option:$ fgfs --nmea=socket,out,0.5,localhost,5600,udp ...and run the Atlas application from here http://atlas.sf.net/:$ Atlas --udp=5600 --glutfonts --fg-root=...A simpler and less precise way is to look in the property browser (File/Property Browser) under /environment/metar/station-id for the IACO code of the nearest (working) METAR weather station. (Or look up lat/lon in your favorite map software. :-)
