November 16, 200520 yr Hi,until now *not* a lot of models or custom designed scenery available. But go tohttp://fgfsdb.stockill.org/Have a look at the "models" page. You can also download worldwide objects/obstacles ("objects").-> Download-PageNice sceneries in FlightGear are (if you have the terrain, the objects and models for that part of the word installed):ie: London (start from City airport) Paris Chicago (as I remember)RegardsGeorg EDDW
November 16, 200520 yr People are also encouraged to create models of buildings around their area, and submit them to http://fgfsdb.stockill.org/
December 1, 200520 yr Help wanted. (Hoped for?)I downloaded a few of those available object files, unpacked them and see that they are packages not named in the usual MSDOS/Win manner (no file extensions) and have to assume they are meant for Linux Operating Systems? So, does this mean it's hopeless for Windows OS?Thanks for any replies.
December 2, 200520 yr Hi,FlightGear works on Windows as well as on Linux OS.For us Windows people the documentation and nomenclature of the (mostly) Linux developers is sometimes strange :-/If they say FG_ROOT they mean the [data] folder inside *your* FlightGear folder. As you could read on John Stockills site- you have "shared" objects you have to put into FG_ROOT to see all the common world-wide objects (only generic !)This means1. download "SharedModels.tgz" and unzip it. If you use Winzip the folder structure can be preserved, then you get a folder Modelsfgfsdb"many files"Copy this complete Models folder into YourFlightGeardataThen you have YourFlightGeardataModelsfgfsdb"many files"2. download "GlobalObjects.tgz"You should unzip this into YourFlightGeardataSceneryObjectswith preserved pathes and you will get a lot of folderslike e000n00"many folders like e000n08"*.stg (files)These files can be downloaded from http://fgfsdb.stockill.org/download/ http://fgfsdb.stockill.org/download/SharedModels.tgz http://fgfsdb.stockill.org/download/GlobalObjects.tgzBTW:3. All Scenery terrain files (from the FlightGear site, graphical interface) should go into YourFlightGeardataSceneryTerrainRegardsGeorg EDDWBTW:Scenery files may also have other locations - don't try that now, take my recipe!
December 2, 200520 yr Georg - Thank you! When I first downloaded those files, they were "tar" and not "tgz", so when Winrar expanded them (Winzip couldn't handle them at all!), I simply got a file (not a folder or directory) with file name only and no file extension, hence my OS question. I, too, have used Linux in one form or another for years, currently Mandriva along with Win XP.Your links provided me with the proper "tgz" format files which expanded perfectly and are now in place.I noticed that the models folder already contained the "fgfsdb" folder and, comparing the two, they appeared to be identical. Perhaps it's because I am using the latest (9.9) version. The SFO region objects folder was there as well; the distro came with w130n30 of 5.83MB whereas the new archive contains w130n30 of 2.84MB.I'll compare the two and perhaps their contents can be merged.Mystery explained! I appreciate your reply!
