October 29, 200619 yr Can some one explain how the aircraft compass works. Say for example I would like to fly from New York City (JFK) to Albany New York (ALB), or anywhere for that matter. Basically I would like to take off, put on the autopilot and be heading in the correct direction of my destination.

Sorry, usually it doesn't yet work like this - neither in real aviation, nor in the simulation that FlightGear provides. You'll want to look into "radio navigation" and "ifr navigation" tutorials (using google), i.e. one of the more commonly recommended tutorials is: http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/This should provide you with an introduction about how flight simulator navigation works basically. However, given that there's an GPS autopilot emulation included in FlightGear, you could add the corresponding waypoints (i.e. the airports) and have the aircraft indeed be flown to the location somewhat "automatically".On the other Hand, you may want to look into the C182 with the KLN89 autopilot, which is a bit more powerful than the hardcoded waypoint stuff. In order to be able to use the autopilot, you'll have to read its original manual, to which a link is referenced somewhere in the wiki.
