input problems

Featured Replies

I am running Flightgear v0.9.10 under Windows XP. I seem to be having problems with my input on all aircraft. When I try to take off, the plane moves to the left. I understand that planes are supposed to skew a little to one side from the torque of the engine?, but this is much more violent. I have tryed a Cyborg 2000 joystick (gameport), the mouse, and a gamepad all with the same problem. Also, how do I see the position of the rudder? Does it automatically return to center when you release the control keys?-Adam

>I am running Flightgear v0.9.10 under Windows XP. I seem to>be having problems with my input on all aircraft. When I try>to take off, the plane moves to the left.what type of airplane?which aircraft specifically?what are your startup/runtime settings (specifically weather)?have you verfified whether this problem occurs with other aircraft, too?>I understand that>planes are supposed to skew a little to one side from the>torque of the engine?that's correct-however, if what you experience is really extreme, you may very well be having a situation where your input hardware may not be properly set up/calibrated.>but this is much more violent. I have>tryed a Cyborg 2000 joystick (gameport), the mouse, and a>gamepad all with the same problem. does this problem disappear when you DISCONNECT *all* input hardware?>Also, how do I see the>position of the rudder?use either the HUD ('h') or the property browser.>Does it automatically return to center when you release the control keys?usually, yes-however, this may depend on various other factors, such as for example your setup/calibration settings. Also, please note that it is generally a pretty good idea to check out the troubleshooting section at http://wiki.flightgear.org to get an impression about what sort of data should be minimally included in any sort of help request, as this is exactly the sort of information that's usually required in order to enable other people to try to help you without having to resort to lots of guessing.Apart from that, it is usually an excellent idea to do a forum/mailing list search to see whether other people have previously discussed similar problems (as well as recommendations for possible solutions)-if you had done exactly this, you may have stumbled upon various related threads, such as for example:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...=2118&mode=fullhttp://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...=1543&mode=fullhttp://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...=1214&mode=fullhttp://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...=1154&mode=fullhttp://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...d=881&mode=fullhttp://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...=1256&mode=full

I am a "newby" here too .... have had the same problem! But I don't think it's your system - I just don't think you've got used to it yet! Some will pull more than others, life's like that. If you really want problems on take-off, try the Fokker Dr1 or the Bf 109G .....Try being a little more gentle with your control movements. It can take some time....and no - the rudder must be returned manually. It's all part of the fun. And quite realistic!

>I am a "newby" here too .... have had the same problem!>>But I don't think it's your system - I just don't think you've>got used to it yet!yes, but while this does apply to engine torque- and weather (wind) related effects, if what you experience is really EXTREME, regardless of the type of aircraft (single engine vs. multi engine & aircraft status) and winds are really 0/000, then it's indeed prudent to make sure that there are no other problems introduced, i.e. by possibly miscalibrated input hardware-using the property tree browser or the HUD will make sure that FlightGear isn't processing input that it shouldn't get in the first place.

True ... true ...I agree; can't argue with that one. It's a shame we can't all see what our friend is truly experiencing here to come up with a judgement. Your comments are well counselled. It's simply that my own "first efforts" were rather disasterous too!:-beerchug

Thank you both for your help. It really helps new people out when a user community is very helpful. After I posted this topic, I found a program called js_demo.exe. It displays the inputs that your joystick is getting in realtime. It seems that I invested in a subpar joystick as the x-axis is skewed +.1 and no amount of calibration (at least in the windows control panel) has fixed it. I have a saitek Cyborg 2000 with gameport, guess I am going to have to find another one. Any more ideas to test would be appreciated.-Adam

regarding calibration: what exactly have you tried so far?is the problem in any way specific to FlightGear?does the joystick work properly for other software?have you installed all required drivers?

Sorry about the long time between replies. It is very bad form of me to go this to someone who is giving me their time. I am sorry. Now then, I purchased a new joystick that can also function as a mouse. I downloaded MS flight sim X demo and tested that and the stick worked perfectly (both of them). I installed all drivers. I recalibrated each joystick 3+ times and they would not work with Flightgear. I reinstalled Flightgear. I unplugged both sticks and tryed FG with just the mouse. Get this, it did the SAME THING. Imagine that, have you ever seen anything like this?Thank You for your continuing help.Adam

well, I would really love to continue trying to help you, however you are honestly making this process unnecessarily complicated by not getting back to the questions you were asked, without answering most -or preferably ALL- of the questions asked, it is incredibly hard to properly troubleshoot your particular issue. So, if you are truly interested in getting this issue sorted, you should preferably get back to the very first questions asked and try to provide the corresponding feedback-if you don't know how to do something you were asked, that's just fine, too-but if that's the case, simply tell us so, rather than simply ignoring the corresponding items!
