Is It Important To Stay Inside The Lines?

Featured Replies

Hey All,Beginner painter here. Dano has me straightened out on file issues (for now). :) I took some time at lunch to study texture files of aircraft in my aircraft directory of FS in relationship to the finished planes. I see there are a wide variety (different pieces of plane in different files) of texture files that endup being on the plane. It appears to me that FS must "sort of" cut out the pieces of texture being used and put them on the plane where needed when your looking at it. Looking at the files in the texture folders it is not always clear where the edge of a wing or fuselage or tail or an elevator is and so painting them I assume needs to cover enough area (but not too much or your painting something else) in order to fully paint the surface. I assume it's better to cover a few extra pixels outside the apparent (though often faint) "lines" rather than being short. Correct? Dano The GIMP looks pretty good and powerful. I think later tonight I'll start having a go at this.Take Care! -Ed-

Hey Ed,It depends on which plane it is, and how the modeller has mapped it, some planes require you to stay fairly close or you get texture bleed, others have massive gaps.Download and install the demo of FSRepaint, at www.abacuspub.com , this will allow you to view how the textures are mapped to a particular model and you will see how close they are.Dan.

Hey All,Thanks again Dano. I'll download it and see what it does for me. I guess my original question was about seeing how far to carry a color or design before going too far and end up off a plane surface or onto one you don't want to be on. Trial and error I guess. I'll let you know how it's going and probably pop in with a few more questions.Take Care! -Ed-

No probs Ed, any questions, just ask.I think that you will see quite clearly how far you can take it on various models using FSRepaint demo, I use it extensivly as a "viewer" whilst I am painting.Dan.
