Altering FS2004

Featured Replies

Hello, I am wondering if a totally new 3D animated water/ocean model can be created and replace the default 2D water/ocean model in FS2004? Also, is it possible to delete all cities that are not on a coastline? I ask this because I am trying to see if FS2004 can be altered and converted into a maritime simulation game, by deleting all sceneries that do not apply to boating and creating a new 3D animated ocean with wave type options, etc... Can all or any of this be done by a programmer? Are the proper files to achieve this accessible? I already know that FSX will have waves in the oceans but I do not plan to purchase FSX since I have already invested so much time tweaking FS2004.Anyone's input is highly appreciated.Fausto

Well, my penny's worth. Why bother deleting the scenery in M$FS?On the subject of a maritime sim - I suppose that depends on what you mean. But be aware that most cities are located near a water source - river, lake, ocean, so I'm not sure deleting non-coast cities would be a good idea. If you want to turn FS into a strictly ship sim, I'd toss out FS all together. You can probably do much better from scratch.I say this because FS is "design by committee" and thus has some real strange things about it. You can tell that different development groups worked on different aspects of it, as their interfaces (APIs) differ.Of course, this also supposes that you have the time and skill to recreate the world.AFA FSX is concerned - I will wait until I hear of others' experience with it. I have a reasonably good system, but I'm still not happy with FS9 and it's annoying stutters. I'm sorry, but if a 3 GHz system can't use max sliders in FS9, I sure won't be upgrading anytime soon to FSX.I used to be a bleeding edge type guy, but although Moore's law is supposedly still valid, I've noticed a decided slowdown in end user experience. Faster chips/interfaces/memory don't mean squat if the OS is incapable of utilizing that power. I suspect more than a few people will be sticking to FS9. Running xml scripts while easy for programmers, takes a lot of CPU. And I hear M$ is moving more and more to xml, meaning the faster CPUs are going to be effectively slowed down. Now I'm more of a wait-and-see guy....Good luck on your project!Senior Captain, Pier Glass Aviation
