RSBN Explanation?

Featured Replies

Can someone give me a brief explanation of RSBN's? First of all what does RSBN stand for? Are the CIS VOR's that are already listed in FS9 RSBN's? Or is there something distinct about RSBN's over VOR's? Does the add-on file "rsbnforfs9" simply add the VOR's that FS9 left out or does FS9 not include any RSBN's? Does the symbol for a RSBN on a standard chart look like a VOR symbol? I'm sure I'm making this more complicated than it is.Thanks,DD

Hi DD,I am just finalizing a very detailed English documentation on AN24-RV RSBN and NAS navigation. Please be patient, it should be ready within 10 days. Until that time here is the short description:RSBN = Radiotehnicheskaya systema bliznej navigacia, Short Range Radio-navigation systemIt is like VORs, but a bit different technology with possibly a nbit higher accuracy and range. Now they use them mixed with VORs in the formar Soviet area (CIS). Only ordinary VORs are included in FS, you have to download an additional scenery for RSBN stations (see below). The main adventage of RSBN navigation over VOR based is that is supports flying to virtual points (for example ISEC points) on a course that does not match any VOR radials. There are plenty of such low and high altitude airways that does not aligned to VOR radials, thus can not be followed without a GPS of FMS generally. This is ehre RSBN navigation is good for. You define the waypoint by its angle (azimuth) and distance (orbita) from the RSBN station and you also define the course (ZPU) on which you would like to approach it. If you set everything correctly you will be able to use the normal VOR/ILS track bar gauge to follow this virtual radial to the waypoint. This is in a nutshell. It is not as simple as this, as you have to make orthodrome (Great Circle) calculations. There is no specific calculator for AN24, I will provide one with my document. As there are no RSBN stations in other part of the World, this type of navigation can only be used within the territory of CIS.There is another interesting navigation system on AN24 - NAS system (Navigaciannaja Autonomiceskaja Systema, Autonomous Navigation System) that is using a Doppler radar equipment to keep track of aircraft speed and movement and thus makes navigation independent of external information. This will also be documented in my manual. For RSBN scenery see message #2 in topic #1 "Russian planes":http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho..._id=1&mesg_id=2Gabor

Hi Gabor, any news on your manuals concerning NAS and RSBN?RegardsAndras

Hi Andras,I have finalized the AN-24 NAS and RSBN document today. I developed an Excel/VBA based calculator also. Tonight I was flying a test near Taskent to check the Calculator. It seems to be OK. Tomorrow I will make another test in the Western hemisphere to check calculations.Today I realized that IL-18 works nearly identical. Tomorrow I will add an extra chapter for IL-18 and then I am ready.I was thinking about to circulate a beta version among the Russian specialist, but they are so much disappeared nowadays, that possibly I will not delay the release of the document with that.So expect the document within some days. Check this forum.Gabor Hrasko

Gabor, that sounds great ! Looking forward to your document !Michael
